Guardians of the Galaxy has taken the spotlight for Marvel at San Diego Comic-con this year, and with glowing reviews from the preview screenings, it's no wonder!

Now, Marvel has announced a sequel, even before the movie is officially released in theaters. Bold move, but we already know that Marvel has a master plan taking us up to 2019, and Guardians is pretty much guaranteed to be a huge success (if the current reviews are anything to go by).

In the Marvel panel today at SDCC 2014, it was announced that [Guardians of the Galaxy 2](movie:1081113) will occupy the July 28, 2017 slot in the release line up. James Gunn and Chris Pratt broke the news during a video bit where they pretended they didn't realize the mic was on - a particularly apt way to drop such a bombshell. Even the style of the panel keeps the sense of humor that is so important in these movies.

Gunn also confirmed that he will be writing and directing the sequel, which is fantastic, as it means that the sequel should live up to the first Guardians. We will also (obviously) be seeing the same cast members reprising their roles.

So where does this bring us up to with the Marvel schedule?

May 1, 2015 - Avengers, Age of Ultron

July 17, 2015 - Ant-Man

May 5th, 2016 - Captain America 3

July 8th, 2016 - Doctor Strange (rumored)

May 5th, 2017 - Untitled

July 28th, 2017 - Guardians of the Galaxy 2

November 3rd, 2017 - Untitled

May 4th, 2018 - Untitled

July 6th, 2018 - Untitled

November 12th, 2018 - Untitled

May 3rd, 2019 - Untitled

The really fascinating part about this for me is that they announced the fifth movie before the fourth - we still don't know what is going to happen in May 2017! This may be something that comes out before the weekend is up, and we know that Marvel is slowly bringing all of its projects together, so what do you think could be filling up those remaining slots?

I would not be surprised to see another Avengers movie toward the end of that line up, as well as probably an Infinites movie (as has been rumored). If [Guardians of the Galaxy](movie:424073) is as well-received as [Captain America: The Winter Soldier](movie:254973) and [Iron Man 3](movie:24391), there is nothing to stop Marvel bringing a third Guardians movie out as well.

Of course, these are probably much later releases, which still leave us with that other 2017 slot! I would personally love to see a female-fronted Marvel movie, but I doubt that that is on the cards. Or could we see [Ms. Marvel](movie:949779)?

Given that this also happened in the Marvel panel today, it's clear that the studio is building up to an Infinity Gauntlet storyline (which is awesome!), so I'm willing to bet that the big missing piece is Adam Warlock. Could we see him get his own movie, or maybe appear in the next Guardians of the Galaxy?

What do you think?
