Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios current president, recently spoke to Crave Online about the current ideas for the Doctor Strange movie, which he has recently announced will be filming next spring, and casting will be announced "very soon". Upon being asked about Doctor Strange, Feige shared the following:
With Strange, it is a classic Marvel origin story, because he’s got one of the origins ever, and it’s our opportunity to take that left turn into the supernatural. Now, what is the definition of supernatural? It varies. We like the idea of playing with alternate dimensions. Strange, in the crazy Ditko acid-trip way, traveling through dimensions and traveling through other realms is something we think is very, very cool. Playing with the perceptions of reality. I just watched the Neil deGrasse Tyson Cosmos series, which is amazing and which may as well be an acid trip. It may as well be Dr. Strange. It’s mind-bending and all based in physics and quantum mechanics. We’re going to play a lot with the notion of that as an explanation for how sorcerers do what they do.
I've never heard of the Neil deGrasse Tyson Cosmos series, but I'm sure I'll be watching it very soon. It's interesting that he should talk about unique dimensions, because that seemed to have been the entire premise behind Thor: The Dark World. Could Thor's dimensions be the same as Doctor Strange's under different names? Or was that realms? Hopefully they explain the difference between dimensions and realms.
It's interesting that the scientific part of how the Doctor's abilities will work, because some of the fun behind his abilities was that he was completely unexplainable. Still, the same goes for Thor's world, and they explained him some without completely ruining the sheer wonder.
Doctor Strange will likely hit theaters a year after Ant-Man on July 8th, 2016.
