This deliciously moody paranormal romance was one of the first Hollywood films to feature authentic supernatural happenings (until then, American cinema didn’t take ghosts too seriously, so to speak). Crisp B&W cinematography, flickering candles, waltzing shadows, a gloomy cliff-side manse, a séance…it’s all here, and it’s done to perfection. Its influences are apparent in many later psychological gems ranging from ‘The Haunting’ and ‘Poltergeist,’ to ‘The Others’ and ‘Shutter Island.’ Kudos to the Criterion crew for a superb polish.
