This week played host to San Diego Comic Con 2014, meaning loads of news landed for all things Superhero, Sci-Fi, and Comic Book Movie related. Good job 'The Week in Geek' is here to make sure you don’t miss out! As always there will be some spoilers so tread carefully!
It’s been a busy week for Marvel, the build up to San Diego Comic Con saw two pieces of concept art from Avengers: Age of Ultron released daily. These individual posters interconnected, to create the completed poster seen above. Then at Comic Con itself, Marvel released the first footage from Age of Ultron, check out the description below.
Joss Whedon said this movie would be darker than the original, and by the sounds of this footage he wasn’t lying. Marvel also had some props on display from the movie including Captain America’s shattered shield, and what is assumed to be Ultron’s first form in the movie. Bad news for those of us unable to get into Hall H at Comic Con though, there are no plans for this footage to be released to the general public. We’ll just have to wait for the official trailers before we get a glimpse at Ultron in action.
During the Age of Ultron panel, Marvel took the opportunity to officially confirm the casting of Josh Brolin as Thanos, by having him walk on stage with the Infinity Gauntlet on his hand.
Ant-Man also had footage released at Comic Con, featuring Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, shrunk down to size and escaping bad guys on a rooftop, utilising flying ants. The general reception to the Ant-Man panel was good, but Edgar Wright’s successor Peyton Reed received a muted applause.
Earlier this week we learnt that Patrick Wilson, Matt Gerard, and Kevin Weisman have all left production of the movie, it is understood that their characters have already been written out in the most recent script revision. However, taking the good with the bad, we were also given confirmation of Evangeline Lily and Corey Stoll’s involvement in the movie. Stoll will be playing the movies antagonist, Darren Cross aka Yellow Jacket. Meanwhile, Lily has been confirmed to be playing Hank Pym’s daughter Hope Van Dyne.
Other Marvel news in the build up to SDCC included clarification by both Kevin Feige, and James Gunn, that we will not be seeing a Planet Hulk movie anytime soon. The reason given by Feige was fairly logical, Planet Hulk focusses too heavily on Hulk and not on Banner.
"I think what's cool about the Planet Hulk story is it's all Hulk, He's a gladiator, he's fighting all these creatures on another world. Yes, some of those creatures show up in Guardians of the Galaxy, which makes people think, 'Oh, maybe it could exist.' And maybe it could exist, someday. I don't think that's the first place we would go though for the very reason that you stated, which is, if we were ever able to do a standalone Hulk movie, 60 percent of the fun would be seeing Mark Ruffalo leading a Marvel movie -- and that's what we would do if we ever went down that road.” - Kevin Feige
Marvel weren't the only company to have footage with them at Comic Con though, and even though it was a shorter clip, DC’s footage seemed to get the crowd more pumped than The Avengers could manage. The clip was from Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, of course, and you can read the footage description below.
DC also released the first official image of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman at SDCC. Much like Superman’s suit it lacks the traditional bright colours, and many people are casting judgement over the fact she appears to be wearing heels. Others feel the suit is too close to the outfit Xena Warrior Princess used to wear, personally I like the suit and love the fact they have included the Sword and Lasso.
During a press interview for Hercules, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson was questioned about the DC role he is often rumoured to be taking on. He said he was very excited and that something was coming soon, when questioned about the character specifics all he said was
“I’ll just say this, it’s the power of Superman, and it’s not Green Lantern by the way […] but this guy has the power of Superman, he can throw down, erm… Just say the word!” - Dwayne Johnson
Just say the word! Well that seems like a very obvious nod to Shazam, but it could also be Black Adam. Either way nothing was officially announced at Comic Con, but according to Johnson we can expect an announcement very soon.
TV Team Ups!
It looks like an Arrow/Flash team up is coming sooner than we thought, with producers confirming a 2 hour crossover event. The event will take place over the eighth episode of each show, so keep your eyes peeled.
Meanwhile on Arrow there's a new hero in town, the first image of Roy in his Arsenal attire was released this week. This season's big bad was also confirmed to be Ra's al Ghul, and you can get your first glimpse of him in the new trailer here.
Roberto Orci has confirmed the Power Rangers movie he is working on will not be a reboot. The film will stay faithful to everything that has come before it, and may even feature cameos from previous Rangers.
Comic Con saw the release of the first trailer for The Walking Dead Season 5, filled with Zombies, drama and explosions. Several cast members have already spoken about it being the biggest season yet, and from the oohs of the trailer they aren’t wrong. See the trailer here.
The Last of Us
A big screen adaptation for the hit game has been rumoured since the games release, and now it has been officially announced. Not much is known at this point, but producers have said the movie will stay true to the game. Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams has already been confirmed to be in talks to play Ellie in the movie. I think Maisie would make a great Ellie, but with the movie being in such an early stage it’s not worth getting too excited about just yet.
