Here we are the week after Hercules finishes 2nd at the box office with $29 million and leading up to one of the best reviewed movies so far this year Guardians of the Galaxy (as of writing 96% on Rotten Tomatoes). For those of you who have been following my posts as of late know that I have been focusing on the main attraction in Hercules, Dwayne Johnson, and the muscle in GotG, Dave Batista, both former WWE Champions trying to make it in Hollywood. Actually, they have just served as inspiration for my last two posts focusing on WWE Superstar Cameos and WWE Superstars in supporting roles. This post is going to focus on current WWE Superstars who could possibly make the jump from the squared circle to the silver screen.
Before I get too far into this list let’s get some things out of the way. I do not believe that the WWE will ever produce another Dwayne Johnson. Love his movies or hate them he is a huge box office draw; in fact, he was the biggest box office draw in 2013. I know that the WWE has tried to copy his success with guys like Jon Cena (The Marine & 12 Rounds), but Jon Cena isn’t the Rock. I think for a WWE Superstar to have success in the film industry they have to play roles like Batista is, supporting roles. Plus with the amount of comic book movies coming out between now and 2020 it may make a lot of sense for casting directors to look to the WWE for talent. I could totally see Jon Ceno or Randy Orton in a Justice League movie as Amazo. Now I could be completely wrong and one of these guys takes off and catches on like the Rock but I doubt it. So here is the List of WWE superstars I can see trying to make the transition.
5. The Miz
The Miz is the WWE’s current Intercontinental Champion and is a former WWE Champion. The Miz even headlined a Wrestlemania with Jon Cena. The Miz does have some acting credits under his belt; an episode of Psych, The Marine 3, and the upcoming Marine 4. Granted the Miz’s acting credits are in WWE Films direct to video movies, but how many of us have starring roles in anything. The Miz may also be better known to you as Mike Mizanin cast member from The Real World 10: Back to New York. The Miz is currently the IC champ in the WWE and appears weekly on Raw and Smackdown. Could the Miz make the jump?
4. Daniel Bryan
Daniel Bryan is the WWE’s little engine that could. He isn’t your typical Vince McMahon superstar. Vince tends to put his company on the backs of guys who look like Hulk Hogan, The Rock, or his son in law Triple H. Bryan is an anomaly in the land of giants. He has one of the catchiest crowd participation gimmicks in the business. Bryan will come down to the ring jumping, pointing his fingers in the air chanting “Yes! Yes! Yes!” He is one of the best workers in the company and one of its biggest stars. Bryan is currently on the sidelines with a neck injury which caused him to be stripped of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, Jon Cena now holds it. Bryan is married to Total Divas on E! star Brie Bella, and can be seen on episodes.
3. Cody Rhodes
Cody Rhodes is the son of WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes and half-brother of WWE Attitude Era legend Goldust. Cody has had moderate success in the WWE under the name Cody Rhodes, but has gained serious traction over the past few weeks in his new Stardust gimmick. Cody has shown a new range with this character and has gotten over with the fans relying simply on promos and little in ring time. Cody has some acting in his background appearing on an episode of Warehouse 13. Cody is currently cutting hysterical promos with his brother weekly on Raw. If they keep it up they may get their own series on the WWE Network. Go to WWE.com and look up Stardust to see what I mean.
2. Randy Orton
Randy Orton is a third generation superstar, 12 time WWE World Champion, and the youngest WWE Champion in the history of the company. Orton is known as the Viper and Apex Predator of the WWE. He is currently involved in a feud with the #1 guy in this list and is always a contender for the title in the WWE. Orton’s acting experience is very limited. He, like the Miz, has taken over for Jon Cena in direct to DVD sequels of Cena films (Orton in 12 Rounds 2, The Miz in Marine 3 & 4). Orton also teamed up with Triple H and Batista early in his career so there maybe the possibility of Randy following in Dave’s shoes.
1. Roman Reigns
Roman Reigns tops this list. Reigns has only been on the main WWE roster for about 2 years now but his impact is being felt. He was a part of the most dominant faction in WWE history in the SHEILD, and he is being billed as the future of the WWE. Reigns is also a distant cousin of the Rock. With the injury to Daniel Bryan and the walk out of CM Punk Reigns and his former partner Dean Ambrose are the top faces in the company. While it may be a while before we see Reigns grace the screens of our multiplexes he will definitely be there one day. With Jason Momoa rumored to play Aquaman I think I could see Roman Reigns as the Main Man Lobo.
On this list I decided to have an honorable mention section I don’t see these guys making the jump but it could happen just look at Edge.
There it is. Did I miss anyone? Sound off in the comments below. Tell me who you would like to see in the movies and also who could you see them playing. Thanks for reading.
