The first teaser trailer from Disney's forthcoming production of Stephen Sondheim's "Into the Woods" has been released and it looks to be a pretty dazzling visual affair. Dazzling and dark - and given the source material, let's hope so.
There's atmosphere aplenty in the heavily-backlit forest as we're given fleeting glimpses of Red Riding Hood (Lila Crawford), Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), The Prince (Chris Pine), Rapunzel (Mackenzie Mauzy), Jack (of beanstalk notoriety) Daniel Huttlestone, The Baker and his wife (James Corden and Emily Blunt), and most impressively, The Witch (Meryl Streep). We're only teased with flashes of Johnny Depp's Wolf and Frances de la Tour as The Giant.
As is often the case with teaser trailers for musicals, this clip doesn't tip its song and dance hand just yet, as nary a note is uttered by the players; but fans of Sondheim's enduring 1987 Broadway musical will recognize the orchestral theme running throughout.
Directed by Rob Marshall, the man who gave us "Chicago" (as the trailer notes, obviously hoping we've forgotten that he also gave us "Memoirs of a Geisha" and "Nine"), "Into the Woods" is sure to have several, more-revealing "official" trailers coming our way before its scheduled December 25th release date.
