After Nickelodeon's notorious Last Airbender movie, one would hope that they learned their lesson about proper live action adaptations. Fortunately, while the reviews of the new [Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles](movie:323027) are not that good, they are nowhere near the disaster people thought it would be.

The controversial Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles currently has a 38% on Rotten Tomatoes with an average rating of 4.5/10. Some critics are saying that the goofy nature of the Ninja Turtles franchise doesn't blend in with the realistic, gritty visual style of the film. Others however, are praising the action set pieces and the characters of the turtles themselves.

Alonso Duralde of The Wrap says:

There are a few thrills and a few laughs in this re-jiggered, CGI-heavy reimagining of the comic book/TV/movie superstars, but even by kid-movie standards, it's a hollow experience

However, Eric Goldman of IGN says:

Despite the strange revamp of the Turtles into huge, superpowered behemoths who seem ready to throw down with Colossus or the Thing, the film does a nice job of capturing their brotherly in-fighting, camaraderie and rapport.

Of course, this is just what the critics are saying at the moment. Only the opening weekend will tell whether audiences are up for this one.

8/7/14 UPDATE: The reviews have gotten worse, and the film is currently at a 17% Rotten Tomatoes score.
