In the latest issue of Empire Magazine, writer Simon Crook asks Richard Linklater if he had any idea of following through on the life of Mason (played by Ellar Coltrane) in [Boyhood](movie:989626).
The film was made over a period of 12 years. When edited together Mason the character and Coltrane the actor both literally grow up as the story progresses. Coltrane's on-screen dad is played by Ethan Hawke, a Linklater regular.
Linklater's response is brilliant in the way it includes his past cinematic universe:
"Well, he gonna be in his freshman year of college now, so I know what Mason's life will be for the next few years. But after that?. . .You know, I was just thinking: Wouldn't it be great if Mason left college, got on a train and met this girl in Europe. . ."
That adventure would become the movie Before Sunrise (1995), which starred Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. That great romance produced a sequel 9 years later, Before Sunset (2004) and a concluding film, also made 9 years later, [Before Midnight](movie:393172) (2013) all positively prove that the best sequel a great director can make are the films he has already done.
