With the upcoming release of X-Men: Days of Future Past on DVD, Fan BingBing sat down with The Star to talk about her experiences filming the movie, and where the character of Blink is headed.
Blink was a fantastic addition to the cast in [X-Men: Days Of Future Past](movie:203942), which brought a slew of new faces to our screens (given the number of mutants in the comics, I'm thrilled to see more than the staples from the 90s animated series make an appearance). One area of controversy for the actress was in her race; Blink in the comics is not traditionally Asian.
In the comics, Blink is a Caucasian girl, so I was curious why Bryan wanted an Asian to play the role. He said that it’s time for Blink to make an appearance and, for her debut she has to be simply marvellous. It was an offer I couldn’t refuse.
I'm honestly thrilled to see that directors are starting to worry more about getting the character's personality and general feeling correct, rather than focusing on race/appearance first. Comic books are traditionally very white-male-dominated, and I'm stoked to see some added Asian representation to the X-Men.
Fan Bingbing also gives us a little taste of what is to come, and it looks like we haven't seen the last of Blink! (Despite her repeated deaths in Days of Future Past. Thank goodness for that timeline re-set, because now deaths are undone, and we can see anyone again!)
I am contracted to appear in the next four X-Men films and it’s going to be really amazing. In 14 years since the X-Men films started, this is the first time an Asian mutant is in the film. So, it’s going to be really interesting.
Clearly the issue of race is important to her, even if she is not technically correct in saying that this is the first time an Asian mutant is in the film.
In fact, it was another purple-haired mutant with facial markings who appeared in The Last Stand, even if I was appalled at this portrayal of one of my favorite characters, Psylocke. Deathstrike, from X2, was also Asian, although firmly in the villain camp. That said, it's still exciting to see a leading asian role in these films, and she'll be remaining a major player for quite some time.
So what will Blink be doing for the next four films? There is one very obvious connection for Apocalypse, at least. For those who are not aware, Blink is actually a descendant of Apocalypse himself, through the Clan Akkaba. Will she be aware of this when battling with the X-Men in [X-Men: Apocalypse](movie:1194267)? Or could there be a little AOA flavor going on in the movie, with her being rescued from Apocalypse by the X-Men?
I wouldn't be surprised if she had quite a major role in the next film, and I'm excited to see where they go with this character.
