2. Female Characters from Marvel and Dc Comics

4. The previous article is available for you to read. However, you can't vote anymore since this will not change anything!
10. Zatanna (DC COMICS)
We’re kicking off our list with Zatanna! Zatanna Zatara is the daughter of stage illusionist Giovanni Zatara. The apple didn’t fall far from the tree, since Zatanna is a stage magician and a real sorceress to boot! After receiving intense training from her dad, this not-so-wicked witch of Gotham fully mastered her powers, becoming able to cast spells by uttering verbal commands backwards! After her father was cursed by the villain Allura, Zatanna began a long quest in order to reunite the family. Her journey ended thanks to the help of the Justice League. Over the years, Zatanna has been a member of the League and eventually, after the New 52 reboot, she became a member of Justice League Dark.
WHY SHE IS ON THE LIST: Zatanna definitely deserves a spot here since she’s not your typical everyday heroine! Just like John Constantine and Dr. Fate, Zatanna has faced many threatening villains, defending the realm of magic from the forces of evil! Her professionalism has made her a valuable ally for Batman, Superman, and many others! She has proven herself countless times, besting way more powerful enemies. For example, when Batman acquired Superman’s powers and defeated all the Justice League by himself, he was stopped by a powerless Clark Kent and Zatanna. So, let me make this clear for you: a Superman-powered Batman, the same guy who defeated Wonder Woman, the Green Lantern, Supergirl, and all of the JL with great ease, was defeated by Zatanna!
9. X-23 (Marvel Comics)
Laura Kinney, commonly known as X-23, is the female clone of Wolverine, created by the organization known as the Facility. What was the purpose of the experiments which led to her creation? To make the perfect weapon, the greatest assassin, a living killing machine! As you may have guessed, the scientist didn’t treat her very well, torturing her in order to active her mutant abilities! Fortunately, X-23 managed to escape and started exploring the globe, trying to find her place in the world. She later became a useful member of many mutant teams, like the X-Men, X-Force, and the Avengers.
WHY SHE IS ON THE LIST: Well, X-23 is basically a female Wolverine and that automatically makes her a badass! She has all of his powers; the healing factor, superhuman strength, senses, and speed, and the adamantium claws! She is also a very complex character. She seems to be just a cold, silent and very quiet girl, but she has many, many secrets. X-23 developed a father-daughter relationship with Logan and a romantic relationship with Hellion, another young mutant. Even Daken, Wolverine’s son and maybe the most hot-headed villain in comic book history, seems not to despise her completely!
8. Black Canary (DC Comics)
Throughout the years, we’ve seen two different women taking the mantle of Black Canary: Dinah Drake and her daughter, Dinah Lance! The first one was a member of the Justice Society, a team consisting of superhero veterans. Her daughter followed her mother’s footsteps and became a crime fighter too, despite the fact that her mom didn’t approve of this kind of life- which is kind of ironic when we think about it! Dinah Jr. was trained by Wildcat and soon became twice the heroine her mother was! She later met and fell in love with the Green Arrow, creating one of the most iconic couples in comics! Dinah Lance quickly rose to fame and became a prominent member of the Justice League.
WHY SHE IS ON THE LIST: Despite the fact that they do not have many powers, mother and daughter are two of the most important characters in the DC Universe. They’re team players, acquiring membership in various superhero organizations, such as the Justice League and the Justice Society. Dinah Lance is also a founding member of the Birds of Prey, a team of only female superheroes and occasionally supervillains fighting for justice. And apart from being a great hero, Black Canary proved to be a great human being, too. She was there for the Green Arrow through some very difficult times, always standing by his side and helping him overcome his problems!
7. Jean Grey (Marvel Comics)
At number #7, we’ve got Jean Grey, one of the founding members of the X-Men and Cyclops’s soulmate- kind of, I’ve heard he’s more into diamond-powered ladies nowadays! Jean’s telekinetic powers have made her a fine addition to the group, with her fighting in the front lines and serving as the voice of reason! In an act of sacrifice, Jean died from radiation, but later emerged again, this time as the mighty Phoenix! Possessing the powers of a cosmic entity, Jean was corrupted and started calling herself Dark Phoenix! After jeopardizing the entire universe, Jean committed suicide in order to ensure the safety of her beloved X-Men! During her perennial career, Jean has been both a valuable ally and a dangerous threat. Although she usually loses control of her remarkable powers, Jean will always do the right thing in the end. Recently, she was brought back to life, in the series All-New X-Men.
WHY SHE IS ON THE LIST: Jean is a wise leader and a very clever person. She’s also an Omega-level mutant, a being with unlimited powers! I think it’s safe to say that she’s the most powerful lady in the list, having telekinesis, telepathy, hypnosis, the ability to create force fields, psionic powers, etc. Although she could easily destroy the X-Men, she always chooses to save them, no matter the consequences. Consequently, she throws away power beyond imagination, she gets to fight with the nearly unbeatable Phoenix and she ends up sacrificing her life, just to protect her friends! She is the proof that choices make us who we are and no matter what it takes, we always have the ability to do what’s right (best line from Spider-Man 3)!
6. Harley Quinn (DC Comics)
We all know and love this character! Harleen Quinzel was the Joker’s psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum. After some intense therapy sessions, Harleen fell in love with the charismatic madman, deciding to follow him to a life of crime, adopting the Harley Quinn persona. She just couldn’t realize that the Joker was a violent, abusive psychopath who didn’t care for her at all! After many years of being treated like crap, Harley finally abandoned her former lover, finding comfort in the arms of Poison Ivy. She is now a strong, independent, although psychotic woman!
WHY SHE IS ON THE LIST: Harley serves both as a comic relief, and as a tragic character. She has a unique kind of madness, being the most unhinged female villain in the DC Universe! She isn’t really as evil as the Joker is; she can be kind, and sensitive, she can be silly or friendly, she can be clever and she can be caring. This is why she is so interesting! She symbolizes the part of everyone’s character that seeks redemption and acceptance! Harley is an example for every woman involved in a toxic relationship, with her finally leaving and never looking back!
5. She-Hulk (Marvel Comics)
Jennifer Walters was the cousin of Bruce Banner, the Hulk. After being seriously wounded, Jennifer received a blood transfusion from her cousin, an act which saved her life and changed her skin color to something… greener! She-Hulk is a larger, more powerful version of Walters! Unlike the Hulk, she still largely has kept her own personality. At first, she couldn’t control her rage, but she soon became used to it and soon managed to be both a successful crime fighter and a successful lawyer. She-Hulk later became a member of the Avengers, earning immense superhero status and becoming one of the Earth’s mightiest heroes!
WHY SHE IS ON THE LIST: She-Hulk is a very skilled fighter since she basically has the Hulk’s power at a lower level. Although she isn’t nearly as powerful as her cousin, what she lacks in physical strength she makes up for intelligence, being a particularly clever and creative person. She has been part of superhero teams like the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the Defenders, becoming very important to each group thanks to her loyalty. Although she was a supporter of Tony Stark’s Registration Side, she served as an attorney for heroes on both sides, trying to support all of her friends, no matter their ideas and beliefs!
4. Catwoman (DC Comics)
She is the most famous female antihero in comic book history, one of the best characters in the Batman saga! The first and most notable Catwoman is Selina Kyle, an orphan who was raised on the streets after her parents died. After years of training, she became the most skilled burglar and one of the GCPD’S most wanted! Although she is an outlaw, Selina has a strict code of ethics since she never kills and gives most of the money to Gotham’s homeless and poor! When Batman arrived in Gotham, Catwoman started developing feelings for the Dark Knight, who was continuously trying to stop her. They got together after Catwoman started acting more like a hero and less like a villain. She usually serves as Batman’s spy and delivers him useful information about his enemies. The second Catwoman is Holly Robinson, a juvenile prostitute who lived with Selina Kyle and often acted as her partner in crime.
WHY SHE IS ON THE LIST: Catwoman is the perfect example of a kick-ass female character. Growing up on the streets, she started developing her own, unique sense of ethics! She is a skilled fighter and has held her own against many heroes and villains like Huntress, Robin, Red Hood etc. She is mostly known for being Batman’s most important love interest. While their relationship has been complex and difficult, they’ve managed to stay together for a long time! While Catwoman used to be on the wrong side of the law, she has never murdered anyone except Black Mask, who was threatening her baby! Catwoman’s violent style differentiates her from the other heroes in Gotham. Her impact on comic book culture is great; she has been portrayed by eight different actors in live-action films and TV series, and she has appeared in many animated series, too.
3. Black Widow (Marvel Comics)
The first Black Widow is Claire Voyant, an antiheroic witch who uses magic in order to banish souls to Hell! The second and the most popular one is Natalia Alianovna "Natasha" Romanova a.k.a. a notorious super-spy. She first appeared working for the Russians as an antagonist in the Iron Man titles. Despite the fact that she started off as a baddie, she quickly changed her ways, and became an agent of SHIELD and an Avenger! Although she did not have any superpowers, she was a very important and useful member due to her combat, leadership and spying skills. The third one is Yelena Belova, another spy-assassin, who was trained by the very same spymasters who trained Natasha, created as her replacement.
WHY SHE IS ON THE LIST: All three of them are very important! The first one is the first costumed, super-powered female protagonist in comic book history (she was created in August 1940)! Natasha Romanova is one of the most prestigious female heroes in the Marvel Universe, being the first female superheroine to receive live-action treatment in the MCU! She was portrayed by Scarlett Johansson in Iron Man 2, the Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Avengers: Age of Ultron. Although she has no superpowers, she has been a very useful ally to Cap, Iron Man, Thor, Winter Soldier, Daredevil, Hawkeye and many, many more. Being only a human with military training, Black Widow’s feats in a world full of superheroes are truly remarkable!
2. Ms. Marvel or Captain Marvel (Marvel Comics)
There have been four characters called Ms. Marvel, but the first and greatest one is Carol Danvers, the girlfriend of the alien hero known as Captain Marvel. Carol obtained her superpowers thanks to an accident which altered her DNA and transformed her into a Human-Kree hybrid. At the beginning of her career, she faced many difficulties such as multiple personality disorder and alcoholism. However, she managed to overcome her problems and became one of Earth’s greatest protectors! After receiving cosmic powers, she became the entity known as Binary and then left Earth, in order to continue her adventures in outer space. She rejoined the Avengers after losing her powers and became a major character in Marvel comics. After many years, she changed her name to Captain Marvel, trying to honor her old boyfriend.
The other three women who took the identity of Ms. Marvel are Sharon Ventura, Dr. Karla Sofen, and Kamala Khan. Ventura was a female wrestler who took the powers of the Thing and joined the Fantastic Four. Karla Sofen a.k.a Moonstone was a super-villain who assumed the Ms. Marvel identity as part of Norman Osborn’s Dark Avengers plan. Kamala Khan is Carol Danvers’ biggest fan, a young shapeshifter Pakistani teenager who currently has her own ongoing series!
WHY SHE IS ON THE LIST: Carol Danvers is Marvel’s greatest female superhero! She combines incredible strength, energy blasts, the power to manipulate light and the ability to fly with military training, strategic thinking and discipline in battle. She is surely the best female Avenger, fighting injustice for many years and defending not only Earth but the whole galaxy, too! Although she has the powers of a god, she is very down to earth. Like every other person, she faces many difficulties in her normal life and she manages to overcome them. If she doesn’t deserve her own movie, then who does?
Before we go on, here are some honorable mentions!
AND NOW, THE MOMENT YOU’VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR…
1. Wonder Woman (DC Comics)
Well, I can’t say I didn’t see that coming! Wonder Woman is our big winner, getting the number one spot thanks to a tremendous number of votes, surpassing Ms. Marvel and all the others combined!
Wonder Woman’s alter ego is Diana Prince, the princess of Themyscira, a mysterious land only inhabited by female warriors, known as Amazons! Diana is the strongest and wisest of the Amazons, having incredible strength, speed, and stamina, but also several magical weapons like the bracelets of victory, the lasso of truth and her royal tiara. She finally left the safety of her island, deciding instead to try to put an end to the wars that had terrorized humanity. During her years in the superhero business, Wonder Woman managed to defeat powerful monsters and even gods, created the Justice League, and became the world’s greatest symbol of peace and gender equality!
WHY SHE IS ON THE LIST: Diana is arguably the ultimate hero, possessing Superman’s strength, Batman’s fierceness, and her own unique charm, wittiness, and kindness. She served as a role model from the early 1940s, teaching us how to stand up for ourselves, how to be brave, how to face off against our greatest fears! She didn’t become a superhero to avenge the death of a loved one; she became a hero to spread peace and love all over the world, proving to everyone you don’t really need a tragedy to become a good person. There will always be those who will fight to make a difference, just because it’s in their nature! Her love for her friends and her willingness to sacrifice her own life in order to prevent the destruction of the League (Justice League: League of One) are the reasons why she’s not only a great superhero but a great person, too! She undoubtedly deserves the first spot!!!
That's it for now! The next time that someone makes fun of our favorite female superhero, he'll have to deal with our fanboy and fangirl outrage!
But the superheroines aren't the only ones who are great! I want to thank all the great people who voted! And thanks to all the readers for reading, supporting and commenting!!
