Thanos didn't earn the name the Mad Titan by being kind. He came to become one of the most powerful beings in the entire universe, committed unspeakable acts of universal horror, and became a name all heroes and villains alike would tremble at. And he'll be going up against all kinds of heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe soon. But who is the Mad Titan? What is he capable of? And what will Marvel be bringing from the comics into the movies? Look no further than here for all your answers!
The Quest for Death & Destruction
Thanos was born and raised on the sixth moon of Saturn, Titan. He was also an Eternal, an evolved form of the humans created by the Celestials. However, he was born with a Deviant gene, which turned him into a monster and turned him from the people of Titan.
While his brother, Eros, was raised to replace their father as leader to the people, Thanos had developed a love for the entity known as Mistress Death. As it continued, Death made him more powerful by training him in the forbidden black arts. But once his father discovered this, he banished Thanos from Titan. But when he eventually became more powerful than any other Eternal, Thanos returned and destroyed Titan and most of it's inhabitants, excluding his father and Eros. This would soon spark his quest to win Death's affection by causing as much death and destruction as possible.
Thanos soon discovered a power that could enable him to do this. They were the Infinity Gems, each representing one of the six aspects of the Universe (Space, Time, Reality, Power, Mind, and Soul).
As Thanos searched for these stones, he attracted the attention of many heroes across the universe, including Iron Man and Drax the Destroyer. Eventually he stumbled across Adam Warlock and stole the energy of the Soul Gem that was trapped inside Warlock.
Once Thanos had all the gems, he created the Infinity Gauntlet, which would give him control over all the aspects of the universe. Using this weapon, Thanos committed universal genocide by killing half the living beings in the entire universe, as to appease Death. The remaining heroes, led by Warlock, assembled to stop Thanos from causing more destruction. Their plans failed, however, and it ended up being Thanos' granddaughter Nebula who stole the Infinity Gauntlet from him and undid his acts.
Even without the Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos came to be a being that all would fear at mention, and one that few would dare to cross with. He became one of the most dangerous people in the universe, earning the title of the Mad Titan.
The Titan Power
Even before Thanos gained the power of the Infinity Gauntlet, he became one of the most powerful Eternals that ever lived. This was with the help of Death, his dark arts, and his actual birth.
Thanos was born with a Deviant gene, which gave him purple hide-like skin, as well as strength and power that went beyond any of the inhabitants of Titan. This also allows him to absorb cosmic energies, and then shoot the energy back at his enemies. Using this ability, Thanos has sent a well-fed Galactus flying out of his spaceship.
And being an Eternal, Thanos is nearly invulnerable, he can teleport, withstand extreme heat, cold, energies, radiation, and poisons. His heritage also grants him immunity to age and disease. He can defend himself from most psychic attacks, and even has the ability to read the minds of various individuals, including Gamora.
Once when Death resurrected Thanos, she increased all of his abilities, making him one of the most powerful beings in the entire universe and allowing him to even regenerate from a skeleton.
So you see, Thanos has an immense amount of power that could become more than a match to the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and whatever else Marvel plans to throw at him.
A Danger For the Whole Universe
When it comes to the comics, Thanos was and still is one of the most important characters of the Marvel Universe. He made changes that could never be undone, except of course when he killed half the universe.
But those changes made him the knot that tied many of Marvel's most successful characters together. And that's exactly what Marvel Studios is going to need for their future movies.
Thanos is Marvel's most important villain at this point, mostly because he has connections to every dimension of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He's the one who gave Loki his scepter and the Chitauri, therefore he inadvertently brought the Avengers together in the first place. And since he also gave Loki his power, that means that he also has control over Asgard through Loki. And to top it all off, he's the Guardians of the Galaxy's greatest enemy.
Once Marvel Studios can get to truly using this character, he could be the one to tie all this universes and all these characters together. It's because of him that we could see an Avengers/Guardians of the Galaxy team up against him. Given that the third Avengers movie will hopefully be centered around him.
If we're lucky, and Thanos is used right, we just might see all these things play out in the future. For now, we'll just have to be patient.
