Spin-off shows are always controversial, and it seems that audiences just never quite warmed to The Originals crew like they did the Vampire Diaries posse.

In an investigation into the viewing figures for both of the CW supernatural shows, TV By Numbers has revealed that [The Originals](series:833141) premiere was a bit of a flop despite having a well established big brother to jump off.

[The Vampire Diaries](series:200853) kicked off with a respectful 4.91 million viewers for it's debut foray onto television screens in 2009, but The Originals only managed to attract interest from 2.21 million viewers.

This might not seem too bad for a spin-off, but when you consider that the premiere shared a highly desirable timeslot with the first episode of The Vampire Diaires season 5, things aren't looking so great for the Mikaelson clan.

With solid scriptwriting and interesting storylines, maybe The Original's major flaw is a lack of sizzling Salvatore brothers? Despite an impressive array of Originals eyecandy, clearly many fans still only have eyes for Damon and Stefan...
