Despite some bumps on the road, Fassbender excitedly confirms that he is still on board for the film adaptation of the popular video game franchise “Assassin’s Creed”. Many die-hard fans of the game hope Fassbender’s acting talent may yet be able to redeem the soiled reputation of video game movies everwhere (let’s face it, Max Payne and Prince of Persia didn’t do so well…). During an interview with IGN for his upcoming film “Frank,” the ever-so-talented Fassbender graciously let us in on how things are coming along with the much anticipated “ [Assassin's Creed](movie:437814)” movie. In regards to the rumors of him leaving the project, he actually reacted with excitement, saying:
"I know, I love these rumors! It’s fantastic. People talk about it, and they’re hopefully interested. Nothing has changed, yeah. I’m still a part of Assassin’s Creed, and we’re working on the script as we speak. Actually, I’m going to go back and see the writers when I get back to Europe.”
In regards to the storyline and script, “Creed” fans know that the team has plenty of rich material to choose from (eight games worth to be exact). Fassbender, who will be both producing and starring in the film, hopes to capture inspiration from the games and remain true to the original source material:
“You know, we absolutely want to respect the game. There’s so much cool stuff in the game that we’re actually spoiled for choice in terms of what we can use and what we can’t, but we also want to bring new elements to it and perhaps our own version of things that already exist in the game. Bu we’re definitely making a feature film, and we’re approaching it as a feature film, as opposed to approaching it as a video game. But I love the world. I don’t really play that many video games, but when I met up with the guys from Ubisoft and they started to explain this whole world and the idea of DNA memory – you know, I think it’s a very feasible scientific theory. I just thought, ‘This is so rich,’ and about the possibility of it being this cinematic experience. So I’m really excited about it, and we’re working very hard to make sure that we’ve got the best and most exciting, original package.”
Sounds like the project is going pretty well, huh? The mass amount of source material, however, could result in some indecision on the part of the writers, though. I, along with many other “Creed” fans I’m sure, would prefer a more original storyline inspired by the games rather than a jumbled incoherent mess of scenes that came straight from the franchise. Thankfully, Fassbender assures us that Justin Kurzel, the director currently at the helm of the project, is “just fantastic in terms of his vision…he’s fantastic with actors…[and] he’s a real heavyweight.”
Fans of the franchise can breathe comfortably now that we have a fantastic leading man and talented director in charge of the project.
Despite his busy schedule with Prometheus 2 and the X-men franchise, Michael Fassbender is set to don the assassin’s hood on August 7, 2015!
