On the heels of a $65 million (ESTIMATED. Official numbers aren’t out yet) opening weekend, Deadline is reporting that Paramount has greenlit a sequel with Michael Bay returning to produce. The movie will be written again by Josh Appelbaum & André Nemec and each will receive a producing credit as well.
Reaction has been mixed to negative from critics but in a move similar to what we’ve seen 4 times now with the Transformers movies, money talks. The movie is tentatively scheduled for a 2016 release date making it a barely 2 year turnaround. Adam Goldman, President of Paramount was quoted saying this:
““Launching a new take on the Turtles into the feature film world was a daunting task because as fans of them ourselves, we felt a great responsibility to ensure audiences were going to experience everything they loved about the Turtles, while also getting to see them brought to life in a way they had never been seen before. The result exceeded our high expectations and the response to the film is beyond great, making it all the more fun to get started on the continuation of their story.”
It appears the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are here to stay and if you’re a fan that enjoyed the movie, then this is great news. What it does say though is that when it comes to Michael Bay, critics and mainstream fans are VERY much on opposite sides.
