The new trailer for Rudderless, starring Billy Crudup, Anton Yelchin and Selena Gomez has dropped - and it packs a punch.

Crudup stars as Sam, an advertising executive whose son is murdered in a high school shooting. In the breakdown that follows, he begins living off-grid on his boat, where he discovers books filled with songs and music left by his son.

After gathering up the courage to perform one in a local bar one night, a young musician called Quentin (Yelchin) hears him play, and the two form an unlikely musical duo.

Rudderless also features Selena Gomez, Laurence Fishburne and Desperate Housewives favourite Felicity Huffman (whose husband William H. Macy directs).

If the trailer is anything to go by, Rudderless is gunning for our hearts. It's a lot of soft-focus string picking, uplifting ballads and Anton Yelchin looking super-cute in a beanie.

That said, there are some serious talents involved, and the initial word from Sundance is that Rudderless delivers on its promises.

The film debuts October 17. Watch the trailer below:
