It seems the recent news that the Star Wars franchise would be continued by an additional three movies has somewhat overshadowed the newly rebooted Star Trek film series.

Indeed, despite the success of Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness, there seems to significantly less buzz surrounding the sequel. Regardless, and despite the 'defection' of Star Trek director J.J. Abrams to the rival sci-fi camp, [Star Trek 3](movie:817262) is still planned for production. TrekMovie.com recently received word from Star Trek 3 co-writer Roberto Orci that a first draft of the script has been completed and submitted for approval.

Orci, who wrote the script with co-writers Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne finished the draft last week and is reportedly hoping to kick off production in the spring of 2015. He is also down to direct the third film in the renewed Star Trek franchise, following the departure of Abrams.

There is currently no announced timescale for Star Trek 3, but the current expectation is that the film will arrive in theaters sometime in 2016.
