It has undoubtedly been a while since I posted a strictly opinionated article. I know you have gotten accustomed to reading movie news with the occasional review here and there, but I thought it was about time I switched it up, and bring you a purely speculative theory based solely on observation and imagination.
DISCLAIMER: What you are about to read is pure speculation and assumption. Not to be taken too seriously!
So, the other night I couldn't sleep, so I pulled out my Google Nexus7 (love that tablet), and just started browsing the various movie sites. I decided to drop in on IMDB.com to see what they are up to about my most anticipated film - The Avengers: Age of Ultron - and what I saw on their cast list caught my eye, and quite frankly, has me intrigued:
To the unimaginative, this would seem like a simple casting, and possibly just another extra. While this could be true, there seems to be a certain suspiciousness about it. (Yes, I had to make up that word just to describe the fishiness of the casting. See I did it again!). Now I know most of you, myself included, might not know who Aurora Fearnley might be.
Aurora is an actor and director born in the UK and is well below the radar. She is a newbie with only just over 200 Twitter followers, and has just under 150 likes on Facebook, so why - in a matter of speaking - is she so important to have an actual "heading" on imdb, "Marine." My theory is this...
Joss Whedon is secretly casting her as Carol Danvers aka Ms. Marvel!
Before you chew my head off, hear me out!
Evidence Item #1
Joss Whedon has stated that there are 4 prominent female roles in Avengers: Age of Ultron. While sharing his thoughts on the successful Guardians of The Galaxy during an interview he spilled the teaser all over the floor. Would have been considered a party foul if it wasn't so juicy! Now, if we are to count Black Widow, Maria Hill, and Scarlet Witch as the first three...who could be the fourth?
It's no surprise everyone wants a stronger female lead as a super hero. And it certainly is no surprise that we ALL want Ms. Marvel to finally make her debut. So why not right now? The time is right!
Evidence Item #2
A couple days ago, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was the first to let fans know that Black Panther and Ms. Marvel are in development for their solo films.
When asked if Black Panther and Captain Marvel are characters that he would like to give a solo film, Feige replied, “Absolutely.” Then, he teased, “Should I announce it? No, I’m not announcing. But it's something…they are both characters that we like, that development work has been done on and is continuing to be done on.”
Feige added, “And certainly, the public…it’s a question I get asked more than anything else…more than Iron Man 4….more than Avengers 3. And that’s sort of the first time that’s really happened to us. And I think that makes a difference. I think that’s something we have to pay attention to.” - Comicbook.com
Evidence Item #3
This one took some digging. I went to Aurora's twitter page to see if I could spot any kind of reference or clue that would point to Whedon's next big hit. The tweet I came across isn't a light-bulb-over-the-head, smack-in-the-face piece of evidence, but is enough to justify some tinkering:
I guess I wasn't the only one to think of the idea. BUT, I am the only one bold enough to write about it. BAM! Now, she did retweet it. Innocent? Maybe. However, I like to entertain the fact that there is something more behind it. She is only listed as a "Marine" while Carol Danvers was actually an officer of the United States Air Force. But, has switching up origins stopped Marvel before? Hello ULTRON! Couple that with Marvel's knack for casting oddballs as leads - who knew who the hell Hemsworth was before Thor? - it is justifiable enough to speculate. Ms. Fearnley does have the look, and the build. She is only about 5'7" tall and is really slim in body. It could very well be that Whedon might sneak her in as a cameo role. Maybe an Easter Egg. Why not?
Bottom line is this. There is no doubt that Whedon has something up his sleeve. The race to bring out a solo female superhero film is on, and what better way to introduce the character in a film of this caliber. There could very well be someone else up for the role, and that Aurora Fearnley is just another extra, but if it is his idea to sneak her in as a cameo, I can stand by it. If it is his idea to hide the person cast as the role for as long as possible, I can stand by it. If it is idea to cast an unknown person that would surprise us all by bringing her to the limelight, I can most definitely stand behind it!
What do you guys think?
Maybe I'm crazy, or maybe I'm just tired as hell and need some sleep haha. Thanks for reading everyone. Speak your minds below. Don't forget to follow me on Twitter and on Moviepilot!
**UPDATE** - A good fellow reader and contributor friend of mine Aaron Kelly notified me last night that on another twitter account with the name Ms. Fearnley posted a tweet stating:
Aurora Fearnley @aurorafearnley I cannot confirm if Ms Marvel will be in the next Avengers film, but I can confirm (sadly) I haven't been cast. #wishfulthinking
I verified that tweet last night. However this morning, a twitter follower has informed me that THAT VERY TWEET HAS BEEN DELETED! Once again I went to verify, and it seems that it HAS in fact been retracted.
