Now I know I'll never be in charge, hell I'll probably never be in the same room as Kevin Feige but it's a nerd's right to speculate, dream and think about what the future of his favorite franchise holds, and in the past years my favorite franchise has been Marvel. Eight years and ten movies later it's not only one of the most popular franchises, but the largest grossing franchise in cinema history.
After the huge success Marvel has had this year with both Captain America 2, and Guardians of the Galaxy we can expect another huge success in May with Avengers 2, they're on a roll!
Avengers 2: Age of Ultron
What We Know:
With this long anticipated sequel we already know we can look forward to the original Avengers coming back! Iron Man, Cap, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye and the Hulk. Ultron is going to be our main villain, but we've been told that his back story is being changed to instead be created by Tony Stark. Along with what we can assume will be an army of Ultron soldiers we know Vision, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are going to be fighting on his side, at least for a major portion of the film.
What I'd Like to See:
I want to see Thanos as the ultimate puppeteer. He was pulling Loki's strings, as well as Ronan's in Guardians of the Galaxy. He was teased in the first Avengers, had only one scene in Guardians, and I keep getting the vision that he's going to be a much larger picture than anyone actually imagines. Some of the theories I've read is that Ultron will be brought to life by one of the infinity stones, a lot of people suspect that Loki's sceptor (which we know is in the hands of Hydra, who are also confirmed to be holding Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, AND who will be the villains in the beginning of Avengers 2.) If one of the stones is used to bring Ultron to life it would be way to tease Thanos in a similar way that he was shown in Guardians, or as Stark has created Ultron for good because SHIELD is gone, what if there was nothing wrong with the original design but Thanos came in and tweaked it, unknown to everyone else. Thanos wouldn't have to have any dialogue, wouldn't have to show himself to any Avenger, but the audience would know that Stark is blaming himself for his creation's havoc, but Thanos is actually to blame.
There is a lot of speculation that Ultron will lock Hulk into an Avengers Quinjet and shoot him into space to get rid of him before the final battle. I could see this happening, but I could also see Banner doing this to himself because he is having a hard time controlling the Hulk. We do know that Hulk and Iron Man in the Hulkbuster suit have a huge fight. Banner is a respectable man, he even tried to kill himself because the Hulk was so dangerous. If he left in isolation it wouldn't surprise me. This also sets up Hulk to run into the Guardians (possibly in an end credits scene), and could lead Iron Man into his cosmic adventures as he leaves to go in search of his friend at the end of the film, shamed that his Ultron creation went evil, he leaves Earth.
What We Know:
We know Paul Rudd is confirmed as Scott Lang, Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, and Evangeline Lilly as Hope Van Dyne daughter of Pym (probably Wasp.) We also know that Corey Stoll will be playing Darren Cross, or Yellowjacket.
What I'd Like to See:
The superhero ensemble is where Marvel has done a great job. Not only with Avengers and Guardians but Captain America: The Winter Soldier was very much an ensemble, Cap was with Black Widow and Falcon almost the entire time, along with Maria Hill and Nick Fury. The biggest thing I'm excited about in Ant-Man is that we're not just getting one new superhero for the Marvel universe we're getting THREE! Scott Lang (Ant-Man), Hope (Wasp) and Pym. Pym has gone by lots of aliases in the comics; Ant-Man Giant-Man, Yellowjacket, Wasp, and Goliath. Even with Douglas' age, I'm sure we'll get to see some awesome action from him!
Somehow these characters will be mixed into our Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'd love to see some science fun with Pym, Stark and Banner. I wanna see Hope and Black Widow go out shopping and get pedicures, and eventually I'm excited for the banter between Lang, Stark and Rocket!
Captain America 3
May 2016 sees our favorite patriot back on the big screen. That'll be three years in a row for Cap. We don't know anything about this film yet, all we know is that Captain America will be returning.
What I'd Like to See:
Obviously we all want to see Black Widow return. Her chemistry with Cap was awesome. Winter Soldier is already confirmed to return, which shouldn't surprise anyone if you saw the ending of Cap 2, and we need to follow up on Cap's search for his long time bestie. Falcon hopefully too, he was a fun sidekick, maybe Agent 23, and we also need new characters too, or Banner, or Pym. Possibly Fury and Maria Hill too.
One thing we still have hanging out in the open is Red Skull, he appeared to disintegrate when he handled the Tesseract, but where he's the arch enemy of our hero I'm sure he'll show up again somehow. The Tesseract is a doorway to another area of space, it's my assumption that Red Skull has been transported elsewhere or Knowhere. I would like to see Red Skull under the puppeteering of Thanos as well. As we build up to Avengers 3 where presumably the Avengers and Guardians battle Thanos we need to see more and more how evil he is, and further the teasing of the cosmic villain.
Hopefully by the end of the film Bucky is one of the major heroes of the movie. This way he can appear in Avengers 3 alongside all our major characters.
It is pretty well assumed, but not 100% confirmed, that Dr. Strange is slated for Marvel's second 2016 film, and with the recent statement that Marvel is planning on stepping away from origin stories it's very likely that when we meet Stephen Strange he'll already be the Sorcerer Supreme, even more likely because of the comment we got in Cap 2 where the Hydra agent was listing off people who were enemies of Hydra; he mentioned Stephen Strange. We can assume that Strange is already in a position of some sort of power to be considered an enemy of Hydra. If you know his back story you know he was just an arrogant surgeon before he became Sorcerer and that man wouldn't have been considered a threat to Hydra, so that should pretty much confirm where his character is at.
We need more characters to be in this film along with Strange to make it an ensemble; my assumption is that we'll see the Scarlet Witch for sure, and because they're kind of a duo probably Quicksilver too. In the comics the Witch went to Strange for help learning about her powers. This would make an awesome story, and then throw in a villain, and we could get elements of Strange's back story as he explains himself and opens up to Wanda.
Assuming that Marvel continues their formula of one sequel and one new character's movie a year the following year will most likely be Thor 3.
When we left off with Thor last we saw him leave Asgard believing Loki to be dead, but he is actually impersonating their father Odin and reigning Asgard. We can expect a few things to come from this film. First of all I don't simply believe that Loki has taken Odin's place because he wants to reign Asgard. Sure we know that that has been his long term goal, but I really think that a large part of why he faked his own death was because he knows he pissed off Thanos. He knows that if he hadn't been in a maximum security prison in Asgard that Thanos would have come after him, or maybe even come for him eventually in the prison. Instead he faked his own death, began impersonating his father who is ruler of these God-like beings, even if Thanos knew where Loki was right now he may be wary of picking a fight with the most powerful man in Asgard.
Thor 3 will bring all of this to the front, Thor will realize Loki isn't dead, we'll find out what happened to Odin. I do also believe that Loki will truly die, and if Thanos is the one to kill him, it'll bring Thanos into the forefront again before Avengers 3, and give Thor a personal stake in that fight, plus it'll give the audiences more of a reason to despise him. It makes sense though, we know that the Tesseract is in Asgard, and Thanos is going to want to go after it eventually. Throw in that Loki betrayed him and ruined his plan in Avengers and it could make for an amazing movie. Thor is an awesome part of the Avengers, and Hemsworth has done a great job bringing him to life! He deserves a movie that is on par with Cap 2!
Black Panther is a really tricky character. He is awesome, don't get me wrong, but who do you throw into a Black Panther movie that can take the back seat? We don't want to use any of our big names like Captain America, Iron Man or Thor because they're leads and anything but a cameo from them and it feels more like another solo film. I wish that Storm's movie rights weren't over at Fox Studios with the X-Men because the two of them together would make a great film! I really enjoy their love story in the comics and it's sad that this won't play out on screen.
The only characters I can think of bringing in are like Daredevil or Luke Cage who will by 2017 will have appeared in their own Netflix series. He is buddies with Falcon, so maybe by 2017 Falcon will be one of the new Agents of the new S.H.I.E.L.D., and with the announcement of Mockingbird coming to the TV show, we could see her too. Or War-Machine/Iron Patriot, he'd make a great addition as a go between for America and Wakanda. Again, though, how do you pull characters that people already know and like into this story before it no longer feels centered around Panther but them instead?
He has a great story, he's freaking king of an African nation: Wakanda which is so isolated and small that it pretty much grew up independently of the rest of the world. In some aspects it's technology is way beyond anything that we've seen so far in a Marvel movie, even though the Panther's people may appear to be simple and poor they have actually chosen to live simple life in their huts and traditional clothing. Vibranium is Wakanda's most valuable "natural" resource. Vibranium is an ultra-strong metal that is basically indestructible. You've already heard of it because Captain America's shield is made of the same metal, and it is most likely what Ultron will be made of in Avengers 2.
Who knows what we'll see along any of these lines. Maybe we'll even see a cameo of Panther in Avengers 2 when we see Ultron steal the vibranium to upgrade himself, we wouldn't even have to see his face, but his costumed figure in the shadows threatening Ultron. One can hope, right?
Another character we've been told who has a movie in production. No known release date yet, but she's a fan favorite and if Feige is listening to fans he knows we want to see her and that we're so ready for an iconic feminine heroine to anchor her own movie!
Her powers are cosmic, she gained them from an accident with Mahr-Vell, a Kree soldier. Yes, you've heard of the Kree. Ronan the Accuser in Guardians was a Kree terrorist; they're not all bad though, and Mahr-Vell is on the side that sympathizes with Earth. I really enjoyed his story in Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. He was stationed on Earth when Kree sentries were sent to scope out how volatile it's inhabitants were. He helped the Avengers fight off the robots, and in the fight there was an accident that gave Carol Danvers super-strength, flight, speed, energy absorption and re-direction. She can even exist in the vacuum of space without a space suit! How cool would something like that look if she ever ran into the Guardians??
Ms. Marvel's sidekicks could include Mahr-Vell, other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, like Mockingbird or Hawkeye. She's also besties with Janet VanDyne, so assuming that Hope is going to basically be the Cinematic Universe's version of Janet maybe Hope and her can have the same relationship?
If Thanos is on his way to Earth in Avengers 3 it would be cool to see some build up to this, and if Mahr-Vell came to Earth as part of a warning we could see him give Ms. Marvel her powers.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2
I wrote an article recently about possibilities of who could join the ranks of our beloved galactic superheroes, read it HERE. My hopes include Nova, Adam Warlock, Quasar, Moondragon, Ms Marvel, Hulk and even Iron Man. I won't go into any of their back stories or ways I see them playing into a Guardians movie, because I go into that in the other article, so read it to keep up!
So *IF* Hulk is shot into space during Avengers 2 by Ultron, and *IF* Iron Man takes off in his armored space suit in search of his buddy. Either one, or both of them could easily play into a Guardians sequel. Like I've said previously though, Iron Man is a lead, to have him appear in Guardians would be complicated so that it doesn't *feel* like an Iron Man movie.
Nova is one who seems like a pretty obvious add to the roster. In the comics the planet Xandar that our heroes saved in the movie was actually destroyed long ago, and Nova was the last member of their Nova Corps. He crash lands on Earth giving his powers to a teenager. Instead I think he'll be the last member of Nova Corps leaving a now destroyed Xandar after Thanos went in to take the Orb. It would be a great way for us to continue seeing how dangerous Thanos really is. If he truly is this crazy, dangerous person we need to see it, we need to understand that, and having him destroy a planet we already have some emotional investment in is a great way to do this. It would make us fearful for what happened if he were to come towards Earth. If the movie started out with this and led up to Nova finding the Guardians we could still have a secondary villain and another fight over another yet to be introduced Infinity Stone.
This movie is another idea that is being thrown around a lot right now. I think it would do amazingly well! It's already got such a variety of characters that it's is own ensemble just as much as Guardians is.
If you aren't sure who the Inhumans are, here's a little history: Long long ago when the Kree (Mahr Vell, and Ronan's species) were at war they had established a station for their fleet around Uranus in our solar system. They found nearby creatures on the third planet (Earth) that possessed the genetics of the ancient being called Celestials. (For those who missed it, the Celestials were mentioned in Guardians, and it was one of those dead creatures skulls that houses the station "Knowhere", and it's his brain matter was being harvested on that station.) The Kree found the genetic material on Earth and thought they could create soldiers with it. These experiments became the Inhumans who created their own society reigned by a King and his royal family. Approximately 25,000 years ago one of their leaders found Terrigan Crystals which give some of the Inhumans super-powered abilities, while hideously mutating others. Over the generations they hid themselves from the rest of the world and they watched humans evolve, but always staying away from them experimenting with their own genetics, eventually perfecting the Terrigan process and only allowing their genetically pure citizens to use them.
Led by their leader and king Black Bolt, his wife Medusa, cousins Karnak, Triton and Gorgon, sister Crystal, crazy evil brother Maximus and the family pet Lockjaw. Black Bolt has a unique ability of speech, when he opens his mouth even a whisper could bring down a city block, a scream could cause a catastrophic earthquake. His wife Medusa has prehensile hair, superhuman strength, speed and reflexes, if you're in a fight you want her with you! The other family members have an assortment of abilities including telepathy, manipulation of fire, water, and air, and teleporation. The family, with the evil brother Mad Maximus as potential villain (working for Thanos?) could make for an amazing movie!
After all of these films, and all of these characters enter the universe we can expect an all out crazy mix in Avengers 3 where we will most likely see the ultimate battle as Thanos reaches his goal of gaining all the Infinity Stones. It wouldn't make for a good story if he didn't at least get one stone, never mind all of them to fill the gauntlet. I think we can expect to see him get all the stones and things will look very bad by the climax of the movie.
Wouldn't it be awesome to see all these characters come together? Star-Lord leading a team to the moon to draw a line in the effort of holding Thanos off on getting to Earth. This team would consist of characters that could exist in the vacuum of space: Star-Lord, Ms Marvel, Dr Strange, Quasar, War-Machine, Nova, and Mahr-Vell. A second team would be in the atmosphere drawing a second line; Thor, Wasp, Scarlet Witch, Falcon, Black Widow, Black Bolt and Gamora. A third team on the ground; Captain America, Medusa, Drask, Hawkeye, Ant-Man (Lang), Winter Soldier, Quicksilver, Rocket, and Groot. With the final team looking for the science solution and finalizing their ultimate plan, while the three other teams are actually a distraction; Iron Man, Giant-Man (Pym), Black Panther, and Bruce Banner. This splitting into groups thing to defend the planet has been done several times in the comics when the threat is huge and there are so many different Avengers available, most recently they used this plan when the Phoenix force was coming to Earth in Avengers vs X-Men. It would be awesome to see something not only so big, but the characters interact with others that they may never have met before. I would love to see Rocket interact with Tony Stark, Back Widow and Gamora staring each other down trying to read each other, and super friendly overly nice Scott Lang trying to introduce himself to Black Bolt not understanding why he can't spark a conversation.
Avengers 3 will also end the contracts of Robert Downey Jr, and Chris Evans as their heroic characters. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if they were both killed off. If we really want to see how dangerous and evil Thanos is not everyone can make it out alive. He wouldn't be a very intelligent villain if he didn't at least take out a couple of our heroes. This could also be the first, and unique time in comic book movie history that someone who dies stays dead. It would be a huge movie, not only Marvel's biggest movie ever, but easily the biggest superhero movie ever made or that will ever get made, the ultimate climax of Marvel's Cinematic story.
The only problem is after such a huge and climatic movie, where do you go from here?
Which of my ideas do you love the most?
Which of my ideas is the worst thing ever and just makes me sound batsh*t crazy?
Like I said it's all just speculation and fun at this point. With so long to wait for even Age of Ultron next year I can't help but wonder what the future will bring!
This post was just for fun, please treat it as such but I would love to hear any feedback or additional ideas for some of these characters and/or films that I may have left out! Please leave your comments below!
