Jake Gyllenhaal is known for being pretty versatile, having played schizophrenic teens, bereaved cowboys and depressed marines in the past.

Now he's back to shock us all with his appearance in Nightcrawler, directed by Dan Gilroy.

Gyllenhaal plays Lou, a guy struggling to make ends meet or convince anyone to employ him. By chance, he comes across the world of L.A crime journalism, where pictures of car accidents and crime scenes get you top billing, and "if it bleeds, it leads".

As Lou rises through the ranks, the line between reporter and criminal becomes increasingly blurred, and he finds himself caught in a race for the ultimate scoop.

Nightcrawler also stars Gilroy's wife Rene Russo as a ruthless news executive, Bill Paxton and Four Lions star Riz Ahmed.

The trailer certainly delivers on tension, with an aesthetic straight out of Drive and some high-speed action. The real head-turner is Gyllenhaal, however, who lost 20 pounds for the role and looks uncharacteristically drawn and pasty.
