Although Shailene Woodley is actually 22-years-old, her previous teen roles in the likes of The Spectacular Now, Divergent and The Fault in Our Stars have meant that she's remained perpetually adolescent in our minds.
And though she's playing a 17-year-old again in Gregg Araki's crime drama dabbling in teen romance, White Bird in a Blizzard, we can safely say she's turning a corner into decidedly adult territory.
Based on the novel by Laura Kasischke, White Bird in a Blizzard, which debuted at this year's Sundance Film Festival, is a coming-of-age story about the sexual awakening of a young girl after the strange disappearance of her mother. Take a look at the latest trailer, which gives us a glimpse at the secrets and mysteries simmering beneath that domestic surface:
Gregg Araki's last movie, Kaboom, was a sci-fi sex romp - so what we're seeing here in terms of making-out is hardly new territory for the director. From the look of this clip, Araki's also pulling out all of his usual moves; the soundtrack's hip, the colors are heavily saturated to cinematic perfection, there's plenty of sexual discovery... And tension. Lots of tension.
White Bird in a Blizzard will get a limited theatrical release in October, after its VOD debut on September 25.
