Doctor Who's Deep Breath was an episode that came in with a bang. With most of our expectations blown out of the water, Steven Moffat has once again proved that he is very clever in with his work. There is a lot of chatter about this episode everywhere online and I'm sure some of you have even watched the episode twice because of all the feels that the episode put you through. And if you've not already seen the episode, you should probably not be reading this because well, spoilers!.
But Peter's episode was very different from Matt's first episode. And if you haven't noticed it yet, Steven made the entire episode in a very Sherlock-y manner, with The Doctor obviously being Sherlock and Clara being Watson. We even had the episode making numerous references to various parts of Doctor Who itself, which I shall leave for you to find out.
And don't tell anyone I said this, but I felt like this episode was more filling than The Time of the Doctor. Although, I also feel like this episode completed the Christmas special, and only now do I feel complete (Not in the way the robot was planning to feel).
This episode, I feel, was meant for the Whovians more than for the show itself. The episode spoke to us, and I believe we all needed it.
You can't see me, can you? You look at me, and you can't see me. Have you any idea what that's like?
I'm not on the phone, I'm right here...standing in front of you.
Please, just...just see me.
This episode gave me my share of laughs, tears and surprises, but here are my top 5 WHOA!! moments from the episode.
5. SS Madame De Pompadour
Ever since the full trailer for Series 8 came out about a month ago, and we saw the robot, we've all anticipated him to be so many things. Some thought he was related to the gunslinger from A Town called Mercy (I did), and a lot of us even thought he was something new. But I suppose, it all makes sense that he was a clockwork robot from SS Madame De Pompadour. Who would've thought that the series would make a reference to it?
4. T-Rex's Death
Remember how the T-Rex was scared and alone? And then the Doctor tried to counsel and comfort her? Remember that brief moment when the Doctor called the T-Rex his companion and promised to get her home? And then she spontaneously combust and died. Never, in all my life have I ever been so saddened by a dinosaur's death, let alone a Tyrannosaurus Rex. One moment I am laughing at Capaldi's actions and then the next my heart shatters.
3. The Robot's Death-ish
This wasn't an emotionally Whoa!! moment but more so because it happened in the Doctor's presence. It is well known that the Doctor can kill when he has to but never does because he wants to. He's like Superman in that essence, because when there is any death on the show, we all know that it is an extreme case. But, question - Did the robot jump? Or was he pushed? This anticipation makes for the amount of Whoa!! factor.
2. Clara's Character Development
This is probably the topic that's been talked about the most on the internet today, and I think I even saw Clara trending on twitter in the US.
Clara, so far, was only seen as someone who relied mostly on the Doctor. We have seen her have courage and confidence but we've never seen her in action, like we saw with Amy, Donna or any of the other companions. But, this episode showed a different face of Clara. It showed us the side of Clara that could stand up to herself and stay her ground. It showed us that Clara is very clever even in the sight of death.
1. Clara's 'boyfriend' calling her up
If you don't already know whom I'm talking about, you should stay away because this is the ultimate spoiler.
I don't know if they filmed this scene during the time of shooting the Christmas special or when they started they shooting for this episode, but seeing Matt Smith made me realise how much I still missed him. This was the ultimate surprise and Whoa!! moment for me. At 1.45 am, I was literally taken aback when I heard his voice on the phone. I recognised the voice even before Clara did.
This scene was all about giving us our closure, all of us who were left heart broken at the end of the regeneration. Seeing eleven back on screen and explaining his wishes to Clara was THE moment of the episode. I cannot imagine of a better ending than this, for introducing Peter Capaldi as The Doctor.
Let me know if I missed something. Tell me in the comments what were your Whoa!! moments in this episode.
