Ben Templesmith is originally from Australia, he is known for his amazing artistic works on the 30 Days Of Night, Dark Days series he and fellow creator Steve Niles created. There is a whole lot more to Ben then just that! not only is Ben Templesmith the best dressed man you will ever find at a comic con. He also Is not only one of the genuinely nicest, funniest and wittiest people I've ever met. He is also not JUST an extremely talented artist! Ben Templesmith, is BY FAR one of the most passionate people about creating comics as I have ever met in my long comic con experiences. I just love the man!!
At this years Wizard World Chicago Comic Con I had the great privilege to speak with Mr. Templesmith at great length. He may think he babbled endless amounts of "nothing" as he put it, for our interview but Ben Templesmith had A LOT to share with me and I for one came away with even more respect for the talented creator/artist then I already had.
Let's just get right to it.
30 Days Of Night: Well what a way to start off in the industry, with a mega hit like 30 Days Of Night? I remember how HOT those books were and how tough they were for me to get!
"Well it was the low print run mate! There was only like 3,000 to 6,000 of those issues out there! No money was coming in to finish off the series!"
So it WASN'T that huge of a success for you then?
"Nah Mate! I ended up doing those last two issues for free!"
No shit?! But what about the Movie?
"Let me tell you about that movie man. By the time the movie got around to being made they......well, let's just say......timing was fucked up and the full value of marketing was missed!"
Leaving the 30 Days Of Night Franchise, was that hard for you to do?
"At that time I was DONE with it all! I mean 30 Days was awesome to do......Dark Days was pretty cool. Then came all the others Criminal Macabre and now they are what? Like six series into Dark Days? I just had to get out of all that mate!"
So like all the armature creators now a days seem to think, that you make a comic book story and then you make a movie that all is going to be good after that. It's not really that way?
"Not at all mate!! That's just short-cut fairy tail bullshit! I'm not in it for the movies or the glory! I LOVE THIS!! (waves arms dramatically at all his comic book stuff on table and behind him) I LOVE to create great stories and artwork mate! You know I'll be honest (he closes in close up to me) and I know a lot of others won't say it because it sounds kinda bad, but I do what I have to do to pay my rent man! I mean most of this goes to pay my flat land lord (all the while backing off smiling and making light of it) but that is how it is mate!"
Ben I totally understand what you mean! I get that.....it's like some artist just do the money gigs at Marvel and DC! That's why I respect you Ben! You do your thing in a way that's not selling out!
"Thanks mate, you are right! I could have sold out LONG AGO and gone and did work for hire at Marvel and DC but like I said mate......I love MY own created projects!! (Ben points to this huge dark green book on display front center of his table). Like this project my Kicksatarter project SQUIDDER, my new OGN I'm writing and drawing that's my LOVE!! This is why i do all the hard work!"
Well Ben, what is the newest project you got going on other then your awesome Kickstarter project?
Well mate, I know we were talking about selling out and I promise you this is not that! I am now working on a Superman series for DC (we both bust out laughing). but it has a lot to do with Spectre which I feels fits my style very very well. It's something I've never done before so I'm really excited for this project. But I'm doing it on my own terms....my own way."
Actually Mr. Templesmith, that does sound really badass and if anyone can pull of some crazy spooky shit with Superman I know it will be you! Thank you so much for this interview, it was great talking to you!!
"I'm babbling ain't I? You're welcome mate.....I do hope you were able to get something for your interview out of all that"
