1) Previous winners won again...and again.

This year's winners were pretty used to getting up on that stage. Breaking Bad ran a victory lap with five awards, including Best Drama and acting awards for Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul and Anna Gunn - all of whom have previously won the same gongs. Modern Family also won Best Comedy for the fifth consecutive year.

2) ...while several other deserving shows were snubbed

Netflix favorites House of Cards and Orange is the New Black both went home empty-handed, while Game of Thrones walked away with a single gong for Peter Dinklage as Supporting Actor.

The biggest snub of the evening went to True Detective, with star Matthew McConaughey losing out to Bryan Cranston.

3) Sherlock still kicked ass

While the presence of Downton Abbey in the 2014 nominations was fairly inexplicable, Sherlock was one Brit show that actually deserved to win. Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch both came away with acting awards for Miniseries or Movie, and Steven Moffat scooped Outstanding Writing.

4) Sofia Vergara pissed people off

The resident hottie of Modern Family caused a storm by taking part in a segment by Television Arts and Sciences President Bruce Rosenblum about diversity in television. The satirical 'gag' involved Vergara getting on a rotating pedestal while Rosenblum claimed that the success of TV was down to "giving the viewers something compelling to look at."

Vergara has responded to outrage on social media by saying that the idea was "that somebody can be hot and also be funny and make fun of herself".

Okay, Sofia, we believe you.

5) Bryan Cranston made out with Julia Louis-Dreyfus and it was the hottest thing ever

Permission to have a much older man-crush? All-round badass Cranston found his match in Julia Louis-Dreyfus, with whom he shared a killer snog as she made her way on stage. The gag was reference to Cranston's appearance on Seinfeld 20-odd years ago, playing a dentist called Tim who Louis-Dreyfus briefly dates. Even Cranston's pretend kissing is super hot, it seems.

6) Weird Al Yankovic was predictably weird

Yankovic was joined by Andy Samberg for an amusing musical segment poking fun at various nominees, including this pretty perfect summary of Homeland: "Beautiful woman/Ugly crying." Watch out for Samberg's appearance as Joffrey, resplendent with blonde wig.

7) Ricky Gervais was Ricky Gervais

The two-time Emmy winner appeared in a Netflix promo that features him in some Extras-esque moments in House of Cards and Orange is the New Black.

8) Women over 50 cleaned up

Finally, there was some recognition of the fact that female actresses do not, in fact, become defunct once they get past 50. Jessica Lange, 65 and 66 year-old Kathy Bates both won acting awards for American Horror Story: Coven, while Alison Janney and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, both 54, came away with awards for Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress in a comedy, respectively.

9) Julia Roberts

10) Jimmy Fallon stole the show

As usual, he was way funnier than the host Seth Meyers, storming the stage Kanye-style when Stephen Colbert went to collect his award, after Gwen Stefani mispronounced his surname:

This is unbelievable, she said it wrong, so there must be a mistake. It’s just very interesting. I want to see the envelope.

11) Billy Crystal's tribute to Robin Williams was perfect

Crystal gave a special speech halfway through the ceremony to mark the comedy giant's passing. There wasn't a dry eye in the house:

It is very hard to talk about him in the past because he was so present in all of our lives. For almost 40 years he was the brightest star in the comedy galaxy.

12) The Orange is the New Black cast took a fun bus to the ceremony...and it was great.

Adrienne C. Moore and Madeline Brewer were perfect.
Adrienne C. Moore and Madeline Brewer were perfect.

They may not have won, but they definitely had the most fun.

13) Sarah Silverman bought liquid pot to the red carpet

What a rebel...naaht.
What a rebel...naaht.

Professional attention-seeker Silverman may have walked away with the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special, but she also found time to cause some controversy. The comedian showed off her vaporizer pen to the red carpet cameras, containing liquid TC. The pens are legal for medical purposes, but I have a feeling Silverman wasn't using it for her headache...

14) This happened.

At least we have Amy Poehler to provide our GIF fix until next year's ceremony.
