American Horror Story: Freak Show is set to premiere on Wednesday October 8th 2014. It will be the 4th Season of the Horror Anthology. The fourth season will be set in Jupiter, Florida in 1952. It will be centered around one of the few remaining freak shows at the time, as its members do anything to keep the business alive. The season will focus on the conflict between the freaks and the "evil forces" who do not understand them. The season will also feature a "Serial Killer Clown" and a "Bearded Lady."

Ryan Murphy has confirmed that Jessica Lange will be returning for a fourth season (rumored to be her final season), although it will be in a reduced capacity. Lange is rumored to be playing a Dominatrix. Kathy Bates is returning, believed to have a main role. Murphy stated in December 2013 that cast members Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters and Frances Conroy have all been invited back, possibly for main roles. In January 2014, Murphy revealed that Coven cast member Patti LuPone was invited back for the fourth season. Sarah Paulson will be returning as "Dot" The Two-Headed woman. Angela Bassett confirmed in an interview with Access Hollywood that she will be coming back. It was announced at the 2014 PaleyFest that all cast members present at the panel would be returning for the fourth season, adding Denis O'Hare, Emma Roberts, Gabourey Sidibe and Jamie Brewer to the present roster. Additionally, Michael Chiklis was announced to play the father of Peters' character and ex-husband of Bates' character. American Beauty star Wes Bentley will recur as Eddie, a tormentor of Bates' character. The Normal Heart actor Finn Wittrock joined the cast in an unknown role in late July 2014.Zodiac actor John Carroll Lynch will be portraying a central antagonist during the season. Grammy winner Patti LaBelle is set to play the mother of Sidibe's character, who is a local townswoman that investigates the murders committed by Twisty the serial killer clown. Co-Creator Brad Falchuk said this clown will be the scariest clown ever.

On August 13, 2014, Murphy announced that the world's smallest woman Jyoti Amge has joined the cast. Murphy had written a role specifically for Coven actor Leslie Jordan, but he was unable to portray the role due to scheduling conflicts. On August 24, 2014, White Collar star Matt Bomer joined as a guest star for one episode. His character is described by Murphy as being "very warped". Also returning to the cast is Naomi Grossman who portrayed "Pepper" a microcephalic woman that has been committed to Briarcliff Manor. "Doctor Arden, you still see me as microcephalic. When my sister's husband drowned her baby and sliced his ears off he told everyone I did it. They tied me up and paraded me in front of the judge, he took one look at the shape of my head and I was locked up for good. That's how it works for us freaks, we get blamed for everything." Rumor is she will be reprising her role as Pepper. Season 4 takes place ten years before season 2. If this is true then this will be the first tie-in between seasons.

At Paley Center for Media's 2014 PaleyFest event, Ryan Murphy announced that the season's filming would take place again in New Orleans, Louisiana, although the show's setting is in Jupiter, Florida. The premiere episode will be directed by co-creator Murphy, his first effort since the pilot.

Ryan Murphy is quoted saying that this season has more of an 'Asylum" feel to it. 'Asylum was the 2nd season of the Anthology that took place in a mental institution for the criminally insane.
