The last sequel in the Underworld franchise was released in 2012 (Underworld: Awakening), bringing the total number of Underworld films to four since the 2003 original. So clearly, the right course of action at this point is just to reboot the entire franchise and start from scratch. Right? RIGHT?
Yeah, I don't think so either. But according to The Hollywood Reporter, Lakeshore Entertainment disagrees with pretty much everyone else in the horror-loving universe. Right now, all we know is that Cory Goodman (Priest) has been hired to write the script for the reboot of the series about a war between vampires and werewolves, but that's really it. Will Kate Beckinsale return? Michael Sheen? Will this happen to Bill Nighy again?
No clue. If this is a TRUE franchise reboot, we may see some of the original mythology but it's unlikely that Selene or Lucien are coming back for fifths. However, seeing as the original Underworld films grossed a combined $458.2 million, it's not entirely surprising that this is happening. Money is money and if Lakeshore thinks they can milk another almost $500 million out of the franchise, it's a given whether we like it or not.
So what's the verdict, horror fans...
