The latest Marvel scuttlebutt is that [The Avengers: Age Of Ultron](movie:293035) won't just be the end of one or two of our favorite Marvel characters onscreen. According to this latest report, it's the end of the Avengers as we know them.

That's right, it looks like Captain America will be assembling a new team (and apparently surviving?) after the events of this next ensemble film. So who will replace Iron Man, Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Thor?

Well we already know part of the answer to that. That same report by Badass Digest claims that Ms. Marvel (who will eventually be called Captain Marvel) is a surefire candidate leading into Phase III. It makes perfect sense, of course, because Captain Marvel.

But who else? It's also been confirmed that Black Panther's turf, Wakanda, is the source of the Vibranium sought after by Ultron. If Marvel follows the same character format as it did for Thor and the Guardians of the Galaxy, then we may expect to be introduced to Black Panther post-origin.

So we won't get the full story on how Black Panther came to be, but we'll get introduced to the meat of his story, and this could lead to his recruitment by Captain America.

The same could go for Doctor Strange, who will be getting his own film for Phase III.

Captain America, Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Doctor Strange and maybe a few favorites from Phase I...is that it?

Well, maybe not. Don't forget we're being introduced to Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch in AOU. And as you comic readers know, Scarlet Witch is a big deal in Uncanny Avengers, when Steve unites the Avengers with the X-Men. In a similar fashion, she (and maybe her twin brother) could round out the team.

That's a lot of combinations, and part of me is getting worried that Marvel will end up fatiguing us with all of these new characters. Still, we all knew this was inevitable (and necessary for when Tony Stark returns to be a badass in [The Avengers 3](movie:738027)).

Finally, we have the last "likely" scenario: Secret Avengers. It could be that Steve Rogers gives up the mantle of Captain America to unite the spec ops group known as the "Secret Avengers" with Black Widow, Hawkeye and (hopefully Moon Knight). Other teammates could of course include Nova, War Machine, Valkyrie, and even Ant-Man, among many others.

Avengers 3?
Avengers 3?

This theory isn't half-bad considering the weight it would give to a stellar threequel for Captain America, though it does shift the focus from the main team a bit. Of course, that just means we have something to put back together again in the end.

[Update: A lot of you guys have voiced in the comments that the team "shouldn't" change because of things like contracts and expectations for certain actors reprising their roles. Guys, I get that and it's good to point that out. But remember that an actor's reprisal (RDJ for example) doesn't necessarily mean that they will be a part of the official team. It could also mean that there would be a de facto team in between films, a la Secret Avengers. Hope that clears things up for those of you just want to have fun speculating!]
