Many have wondered where Jon Stewart has been over the course of the past year or so. For much of the last year his seat on Comedy Central's The Daily Show has been filled with substitutes. What has he been doing and where has he been? He was busy making his directorial debut on a little film called Rosewater.
[Rosewater](movie:886441) is not a comedy and really isn't a joking matter at all. However, under Stewart's jovial demeanor it is obvious he has always had a high intellect and is keenly aware of the world around him. His first movie tackles a true story of a journalist who is unjustly arrested and detained in Iran for covering the presidential elections and accused of being a spy. The film stars Gael Garcia Bernal (Amores Perros, Babel) in what looks to be another standout performance. The trailer looks to show a film full of despair, hope and bravery. Check out Rosewater:
Here is the official synopsis:
Rosewater is based on the best-selling memoir by Maziar Bahari. The film is the directorial debut of Jon Stewart, and stars Gael García Bernal. Rosewater follows the Tehran-born Bahari, a journalist with Canadian citizenship. In June 2009, Bahari returned to Iran to interview Mir-Hossein Mousavi, who was the challenger to president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. As Mousavi’s supporters protested Ahmadinejad’s victory declaration hours before the polls closed, Bahari endured personal risk by sending footage of the street riots to the BBC. Bahari was arrested by police, led by a man identifying himself as “Rosewater,” who tortured and interrogated him over the next 118 days. With Bahari’s wife leading an international campaign to have her husband freed, and media outlets keeping the story alive, Iranian authorities released Bahari on bail and the promise he would act as a spy for the government.
Rosewater will be in theaters November 7th, 2014.
