There's no denying it, Guardians of the Galaxy is the absolute hit of the summer. It's breaking records all over the place, starting dance crazes and catapulting the stars to huge heights of fame. But what about those actors who might have been, who missed out on the opportunity by just a hair? And could we see them in [Guardians of the Galaxy 2](movie:1081113)?
One of those actors is no other than Jason Momoa (of Game of Thrones fame). Although Dave Batista was the favorite for James Gunn, Andy Park has just released concept art showing that Momoa was also in line to play the taciturn muscle in the movie.
Let's get a better look at that image, shall we?
Without the hair, he is almost unrecognizable, but doesn't he look amazing? There is no doubt in my mind that Momoa would have made an absolutely incredible Drax, but I'm actually really glad that they didn't go that direction.
For one thing, the role is basically a reprise of Khal Drogo, and as much as I loved that part, playing two such similar characters back-to-back might lead to pigeonholing. Another muscle-bound warrior with body markings, few lines and a hidden heart? Sure, he could do it, but I would rather see him take on a different role, something to show people that he is more than just the strong and silent.
The main reason, however, is that if he had taken on Drax, the chances of him also playing Aquaman would be greatly reduced, and I really want him to (finally) be confirmed as Aquaman.
I've written before about how much I love Momoa as Aquaman, how I think he would be able to provide the character with some much needed street cred, and that it is a far more interesting role for him. On top of that, Aquaman is a solid candidate for a solo movie, whereas Drax really isn't, and I would be first in line to see a full-length Momoa movie.
All that said, I was still thrilled to see the concept art with Momoa in it, for one very good reason. It gives fans a chance to see how the actor could look very different for a role. With Khal Drogo being such a huge figure for Momoa to play, I think that it is hard for many fans to imagine him looking different. There have been so many complaints that Momoa cannot be Aquaman because he is a brunette, so maybe this new look at the GoT star will convince people that yes, hair dye is a thing, and no, he doesn't have to look like Drogo to play another part.
At this point, I'd actually be really disappointed if someone else was going to be Aquaman, but I know the fandom is still on the fence, so what do you think?
