Captain America: The Winter Soldier may well have been one of the best films of the year - and one of the greatest superhero movies of all time - but that doesn't mean there wasn't at least a little bit of room for improvement.
Specifically, in this case, a particular scene that the film's directors - Joe and Anthony Russo - have recently revealed was cut from the film at an early stage.
Despite being so potentially awesome it's ridiculous.
And why was it going to be so awesome, you ask?
Cap was going to fight Hawkeye. In a ravine.
And that's just good times for everyone.
The scene was, as the directorial brothers put it, designed to "complicate the relationship between Cap and his S.H.I.E.L.D agent friends." The question then being:
"If Hawkeye got a call from S.H.I.E.L.D saying Captain America is a fugitive, would he listen to that call or not listen to that call?"
The only problem? They had to cut it:
"That sequence actually was heartbreaking for us to cut it. I think it ultimately might have been a conflict with Renner’s schedule."
The thing is, we here at Moviepilot don't believe in lost causes, so here - to accompany the Russo brothers' description of what we would have seen - is a sort-of shot by shot breakdown. Using comics. Just because.
"Hawkeye was chasing Cap through Washington D.C..."
"...There was an awesome sequence where they confronted each other in a ravine on the outskirts of D.C...."
"...and Hawkeye was shooting a series of arrows..."
"...closing in on Cap..."
"...Cap closing in on him..."
"...And then Cap took him down..."
"...and he realized for the first time that Hawkeye was trying to trick S.H.I.E.L.D, where he whispered something into Cap’s ear..."
"...that Cap had a tracker on his suit and to punch Hawkeye to make it look real..."
"...because there was a Quinjet hovering above where they were watching the feedback back at S.H.I.E.L.D."
To which, presumably, Cap responded much like this:
Because, honestly, who knew Hawkeye was such a badass?
All of which would have been...awesome.
Damn you, brutal necessities of time, money and scheduling!
Luckily, we're still set to see Hawkeye be more of a badass than usual in [The Avengers: Age Of Ultron](movie:293035) next year, and possibly even in [Captain America 3](movie:994409) when it arrives in 2016.
What do you guys reckon? Wish a Hawkeye fight scene had made the final movie?
