Thought Robert Downey Jr was an outside the box choice to play Iron Man? Just wait till you see Al Pacino play...somebody.
The legendary actor was apparently so blown away by seeing Guardians of the Galaxy that he now wants to appear in an upcoming Marvel Movie. Speaking to Deadline, he revealed that:
“I just saw Guardians Of The Galaxy… It was amazing. I did find it the most entertaining, inventive, beautiful film.”
Which he followed up by adding:
“It was not something I would readily go see, but my kids got me to go, and one has to draw the line at where prejudice starts and where it ends — that was good stuff!...I recognized the ingenious stuff they were doing; the invention, the attractiveness of the way they were performing it. It had Shakespearean feeling to it at times. I was caught up in the big screen, the great sound…”
Before being asked whether or not he would consider taking a role in either a Guardians sequel or another Marvel movie, to which Pacino responded enthusiastically:
“I would do anything that I could understand in terms of how I fit in it. And you know, of course if I could fit in it. Anything’s possible...You know, I did Dick Tracy and I got an Oscar nomination, so come on. I mean, what can I say?”
All of which is great and all, but the big question still remains: Who will he play?
We thought we'd throw a few potential candidates into the ring, just in case James Gunn has accidentally stumbled onto the page and is reading this...
[Note, potential Marvel SPOILERS below]
In the comics, Peter Quill (aka Star-Lord)'s father is J'son of Spartax, Emperor of the Spartoi Empire. In the movies...he won't be. James Gunn has already revealed that he knows exactly who Quill's father is, but that his origin has been fundamentally altered for the cinematic universe. Could that open up a role for Pacino (and an awesome Chris Pratt sarcasm-off)?
Kang the Conqueror
A time-travelling despot, Kang has variously been one of the Avengers' most feared opponents, an Egyptian Pharaoh, several different versions of himself all at once, and an ally of the Avengers against one of those versions in the excellent (and perfectly designed for an Avengers/Guardians crossover storyline) Avengers Forever. Since he can essentially be more than one age at once due to his time-travelling nature, Kang could be a perfect role for Pacino to take half of, alongside a younger actor.
An extra-dimensional demon with a suspicious resemblance to the Christian Devil, Mephisto rules a pocket dimension known as 'Hell' or 'Hades' despite not actually being the religious conception of them. He has been a consistent thorn in the sides of many Marvel superheroes over the years, particularly during the Inifinity Gauntlet crossover event. Y'know, the one featuring Thanos, and all those Infinity Gems we keep seeing in the movies.
Though, would anyone really buy Pacino as the Dev...oh, wait:
That would...actually totally work.
A cosmic entity as old as the universe itself, and dedicated to protected all versions of reality from imbalance, the Living Tribunal tends to manifest itself as a being with three faces symbolizing equity, necessity and revenge. But more importantly, three faces means three potential Pacino performances (in which he could potentially make a star go supernova with a single flick of his wrist).
Uatu the Watcher
An immortal extra-terrestrial, Uatu is a member of an alien race known as the Watchers who have sworn a strict oath of non-interference. Stationed on Earth's moon, he has taken it as his duty to observe all that happens on the planet, without ever interfering. Which, of course, almost never works out that way. He originally appeared in Fantastic Four comics, so his rights are likely held by Fox, but all the same - just look at him. Pacino could totally play that. Really, really weirdly.
Now all Marvel have to do is get Pacino signed on in time for [Guardians of the Galaxy 2](movie:1081113)...
What do you guys think? Who should Pacino play in the MCU?
