Ian Somerhalder spends much of his spare time fighting tooth and nail for the future of the environment, but he's worried a lot of people's minds are distracted elsewhere...

In a recent post on his Instagram account, the hunky [The Vampire Diaries](series:200853) actor mourned the fact that more people know about the shallow antics of Kim Kardashian than they do the plight of the planet they live on. The 35-year-old star captioned the picture below with the following heartfelt plea;

Doing this right now. I'm so grateful for the interaction- however, I'm a little scared. Concerned I should say. It's crazy how little many know about climate change, oil, renewable energy, policy, and a safer sustainable future. Yet people know everything about Kim Kardashian! Yikes! I want to make the battle on climate change fun, engaging, community building, sustainable and sexy. Help me!!!!

Whereas I totally support what Ian is saying, does anyone else think this seems a little mean? Attacking a pop culture icon (Kim K qualifies, whether you like it or not) that many people find entertaining is kind of alienating.

It comes across to me that he is almost implying that anyone who watches Keeping Up with the Kardashians is not environmentally concious, which simply isn't true!

I recycle all my trash religiously and my guilty pleasure is totally reality TV... You can mix highbrow with lowbrow, Ian. As a TV star and activist yourself, you should know!

Knowing Somerhalder though, he definitely didn't mean to offend. I totally agree that environmentalism needs a sexy revamp, and Ian is just the man to do it!
