Matt Damon might end up stranded on Mars in The Martian, but it looks like he's going to get some female company in the form of Jessica Chastain or Kristen Wigg.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, both actresses are currently being considered for the lead female role in Ridley Scott's upcoming scifi disaster flick. At the moment their exact role has not been confirmed, and it's unclear if they'll be a fellow colonist stranded on Mars or one of the NASA rescue team,.
[The Martian](movie:959366) is based on the self-published Amazon book written by Andy Weir. It centers on an astronaut who is stranded on a Martian colony and struggles to survive in the inhospitable climate. Originally, Drew Goddard was signed on to direct, but he reportedly left the project to helm Sony's [Sinister Six](movie:1274281) spin-off. Following this, sci-fi veteran Ridley Scott added his credentials to the project.
Jessica Chastain has been in high demand ever since appearing in the Oscar nominated Zero Dark Thirty. She currently has several highly anticipated projects in the works including [The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby](movie:738419), [Interstellar](movie:813746) and [A Most Violent Year](movie:967523).
Meanwhile, Kristen Wiig is also making her transition from a purely comedic actress to one who can also handle drama. She recently appeared in last year's The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, while she's also due to appear in the upcoming [The Skeleton Twins](movie:723714).
