You guys asked for it, and being the benevolent leader that I am (just kidding), I am answering! Now, I'm going to be honest, this post was a little more difficult than the Disney Princes post. I attribute this to the fact that most Disney Villains are less human-looking, or not human at all. Also because, as pointed out by a few people, many of these have already been cast, so it can be tricky to imagine other people playing the characters. Luckily, this is just made in good fun!
In any case, follow me once again for a Disney fantasy draft. Here are my suggestions for who could do the best job of playing the big bad!
Lady Tremaine (Cinderella)
Here's one of the women that's been giving stepmothers a bad name for years. She's absolutely terrifying, even though she doesn't have any mystical powers other than her evil glare.
I think that everyone will agree that Meryl Streep could play a piece of poop on the sidewalk and she'd be magnificent. Her role in The Devil Wears Prada, proves that she'd be more than capable of playing Lady Tremaine. Sorry Cinders, there's no way you're going to the ball in that dress!
Governor Ratcliffe (Pocahontas)
Governor Ratcliffe is one of my least favorite Disney Villains. Not particularly because he's awful or anything, he just never really stands out in my mind. If there were to ever be a live-action version of Pocahontas they would need to cast an actor who could make this character reach his full, villainous potential.
Eric Stonestreet would be perfect for the role! Not only because he kind of looks the part (sorry, Eric) but because he has a flair for the dramatic which would help elevate Governor Ratcliffe to a new level. He's often seen as a great comedic actor for his work on [Modern Family](series:201500) but he's also done some serious stuff too, like when he appeared on an episode of [American Horror Story](series:206668).
Doctor Facilier (The Princess and the Frog)
The Shadow Man is just evil and creepy. But the man does have some pretty sweet magic tricks and some crazy "friends on the other side." Whoever plays him would have to be a real showman.
Eddie Murphy has always been one of those comedians that you know kind of has a dark side too. Just take a look at him in Dreamgirls. Even his song "Steppin' to the Bad Side" reminds me of Doctor Facilier. Entertaining, a little dark, and he can sing!
Gaston (Beauty and the Beast)
Oh Gaston, who could possibly play you? No one's slick as Gaston. No one's quick as Gaston. No one's neck's as incredibly thick as Gaston's, except maybe...
There we go! I'd hate to put the amazing Joe Manganiello in this position, but I would love to see him play Gaston. Even if it means hating him for a little for the duration of the film. I mean, have you seen his body? He looks like he eats about five dozen eggs. This would explain why he's roughly the size of a barge!
Ursula (The Little Mermaid)
In real life, Ursula's character was based on the drag queen Divine, who was exactly that. As a villain, however, she needs to be just as over the top as she is evil. This sea witch is large and in charge and needs someone with an equally big personality to play her.
Who else could possibly play Ursula but the legendary Kathy Bates? If Misery and [American Horror Story](series:206668) were any indication, we know that this chick can get down with being a bad b*tch.
Cruella de Vil (101 Dalmatians)
I am well aware that this role kind of already belongs to Glenn Close for her awesome portrayal of PETA's #1 cartoon enemy in the 1996 live-action version of 101 Dalmatians. But in movie years that was practically a millennia ago! Time for a reboot!
Whether it's the halls of a high school or the boss of an electronic store, Jane Lynch is always the head b*tch in charge. She's just the right mix of kooky and scary to pull off playing Cruella.
Hades is one of my favorite Disney Villains. He's a hot-headed (literally), quick-witted villain that everyone just kind of gets. Yeah, he's a bad guy, but his job is guarding the underworld. It probably gets a little depressing down there. His actions have never seemed terribly unreasonable to me!
This is one of those times where I can only imagine the voice actor playing the live-action version. Before Woods, Disney had written Hades as a slow, sinister character. After Woods got ahold of the character there was no turning back! He became a sort of suave, real rapid-fire villain. I just can't see anyone else accomplishing it to the same level of excellence that Woods can.
Judge Claude Frollo (The Hunchback of Notre Dame)
Ugh. Frollo is just so awful. He makes me feel so icky and creeped out. Looking back, I'm a little surprised that my parents let me watch this movie so often. I mean, his song is titled "Hellfire" and he tries to throw a baby down a well for goodness sake! I guess the 90s were just a different time. Who could possibly be this evil?
Boom! I'm actually really proud of this one. After thinking about a few possibilities, this one hit me like a truck. How different are Frollo and Tywin Lannister, anyway? Both are manipulative, intimidating, and have little regard for human life. Bangarang.
Yzma (The Emperor's New Groove)
This one was really tricky. I had trouble for two reasons: 1. It seems cruel to cast anyone as this decrepit old egomaniac. 2. If I am to choose anyone, I would want to pick the late, great Eartha Kitt.
Okay, I know that Angela Bassett is way too beautiful to play Yzma normally. But picture her with some serious aging makeup and spidery fake eyelashes. She's already played a witch in [American Horror Story](series:206668) (just now realizing how many AHS alumni I have on this list!). Just put a hot-dumb Kronk next to her and I can totally see her trying to overthrow an empire.
Captain Hook (Peter Pan)
Hook is another one of those comedic bad guys that we all love to hate. Yes, he's a bad guy, but he's not a very good bad guy. How is he constantly getting beaten by a group of young boys? Dustin Hoffman was amazing in Hook, as was Jason Isaacs in the 2003 version of Peter Pan, but this list wouldn't be complete without a new casting for one of my favorite Disney Villains
I know that a lot of people are going to say that I should have put Russell Brand here. I hear ya, Brand makes sense. He does have the hair and the somewhat pirate-y attitude already, but for some reason he just makes less sense than Jerome Flynn. Just look at the nose, the chin, the facial hair. And if you watch [Game of Thrones](movie:817617) then you know he is able to add moments of brevity to an otherwise serious show.
Mother Gothel (Tangled)
Mother Gothel is one of the most devious Disney Villains. She freakin' convinces Rapunzel that she's her mother and keeps her locked in a tower her entire life. And why? Just because the woman couldn't age gracefully. What a sociopath.
I know Julia Louis-Dreyfus is not known for serious roles, but that's why this role is perfect for her! Mother Gothel is for sure evil, but for most of the movie she's pretending to be sweet and loving. And if you've seen [Veep](series:720997), then you know JLD can definitely be hilariously full of herself like the vain Mother Gothel. Not to mention, she has the pipes for the role!
The Evil Queen (Snow White)
Here's the OG evil stepmother. Compared to the Evil Queen, Madame Tremaine seems like a sweetheart. She wanted to cut out Snow White's heart! What's that about?
This is all in the bone structure and the eyebrows. And after playing Phoenix in X-Men: The Last Stand it's clear that she can be intense and intimidating. I'm plenty scared of her.
The Red Queen (Alice in Wonderland)
The role of the Red Queen was already taken on by Helena Bonham Carter in the 2010 version of Alice in Wonderland. But the way I imagined it, the Red Queen would have to be played by someone really funny to fully get across the absolute ridiculousness of the character. No offense to Helena Bonham Carter, but I have another actress in mind.
Melissa McCarthy can do just about anything and be funny. That's why she'd be perfect as the Red Queen! Even thinking about her freaking out over the color of roses, or playing croquet with flamingos and hedgehogs cracks me up. An animated actress for an animated role!
Shan Yu (Mulan)
I don't know anyone with skin or eyes that look like this. Shan Yu somehow looks less human to me than Ursula. So picking a human to play him was no easy task.
David Lee McInnis
David Lee McInnis is an American-born actor who has become a notable celebrity in South Korea. He recently went on to play Lord Raiden in the second season of the Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series. Look at those eyebrows! Need I say more?
Jafar is a psycho. A slick, oily, brilliant psycho. Granted, he has a parrot voiced by Gilbert Gottfried on his shoulder all day which could drive anyone crazy. But still - psycho.
Ben Kingsley is like Meryl Streep in the sense that he can pretty much play anyone in the history of the world. From Gandhi to [Iron Man 3](movie:24391), name a character and Ben can do it. The man is a chameleon!
Scar (The Lion King)
Not sure if you noticed, but Scar is not a man. Scar is a lion. So, I wasn't really sure how to go about this. It would be cool to see a live action movie version of The Lion King but that would basically be Shakespeare's Hamlet.
Jason Momoa won me over on this one solely based on his hair and scar. Pretty superficial of me, I know. But he also played Khal Drogo on [Game of Thrones](movie:817617) (wow, lots of GoT in this post too!) where he played a pretty serious warlord. A murderous lion doesn't seem too far out of his scope!
Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty)
We all know that there's really only one person who could play this role...
Haha just kidding, but I do love Malefiftycent!
Angelina totally nailed this role. Not to mention, those cheekbones. Wowza.
You also might have noticed that I left out Prince Hans, but I included him on the Disney Princes version.
So there you go! Those are my real life fantasy casting draft picks, Disney Villains version. As is always the case, these are just my picks, which means that you don't have to agree with any of them. If you have actors or actresses you would choose instead I'd love to read them in the comments!
