From what we've been able to tell so far from all the promo material, [The Walking Dead](series:201193) Season 5 is going to focus on the "family" Rick & co. have built to this point, and Rick's feelings of responsibility for keeping his family safe. But the latest TV spot clearly shows that Rick's hopes of his family remaining alive and well are...well, probably not gonna happen. C'mon, Rick, don't you know no one's safe in The Walking Dead by now?
[[Game of Thrones](movie:817617) cast looks over, nods, fist-bumps TWD cast in solidarity]
SPOILER ALERT: Gareth's still batshit crazy. Shocker!
None of this offers up any new footage other than what we've already seen in the original Comic-Con trailer, but it definitely reinforces the whole idea that Rick, try as he might, will fail to keep his makeshift family safe from harm.
Gareth's threat to Rick that "you are not safe" is a nice callback to the deleted scene from Season 4 in which Rick says, "I want you to be safe, Carl. Above everything else." Rick's telling Carl that he believes his to be a good person...but also that he disagrees with Carl running off to help the screaming man on the way to Terminus. It's a deeper discussion between Rick and a boy forced to grow up too quickly, but the heart of it is a dad simply saying to his son, "Please don't be a hero. I couldn't bear to lose you, too. The only thing I have left in this world is you and our makeshift family and it is the driving force of my life to keep you safe."
Sorry, Rick...but it looks like Gareth is hellbent on making that impossible. Now more than ever it feels like no one is safe, no one is untouchable, no one cast member is sacred. Buckle up, Walking Dead fans. It looks like Season 5 is going to be even more of an emotional roller coaster than usual.
BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
A ton of new promo photos were also released, and I've rounded up some of the new ones I could find. Check 'em out:
