When it comes to making it in Hollywood, it takes more than just talent. Some people just have “it” — that special something that separates them from the pack and launches them into super-stardom.
The following five actors have certainly showed that they possess a healthy dose of “it” and are on their way to becoming major players in the movie-making industry.
1. Chloë Grace Moretz
This little ass-kicker etched her name in bad-guy blood after starring in “Kick Ass” and “Kick Ass 2.” In the films, she played the deadly heroine Mindy Mccready, aka Hit Girl. Alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson (who almost made this list) and Nicholas Cage, she dominated the female role that proved that sometimes, it’s better to kick ass first and ask questions later.
This talented young starlet is currently showing off her acting range by starring in the romantic drama, “If I Stay,” in which she plays a young teen on life support after a tragic car accident.
The film mixes in some spiritual and fantastical elements in a unique way that allows her to decide whether or not she should stay on Earth to live out the rest of her life. Sounds like a tearjerker if I’ve ever heard of one.
On The Horizon: Look out for Moretz to make some serious waves in the next year or so in the upcoming action films, “The Equalizer,” alongside Denzel Washington, and in the sci-fi alien invasion epic, "The Fifth Wave." The young actress has the range, unique beauty and acting chops to become a household name within the next year.
2. Shailene Woodley
If you don’t know this name by now, you’re just not paying attention. After playing Amy Juergens in “The Secret Life of an American Teenager” and then her big screen debut in Alexander Payne’s “The Descendants,” Woodley successfully acted the hell out of the role of Hazel Lancaster in the adaptation of the popular teen romance novel, “The Fault In Our Stars.”
She was able to gracefully pull off a character suffering from advanced cancer while simultaneously falling in love with a boy who faces extreme medical conditions of his own.
Woodley has been flexing her acting muscles in a big way throughout the last few years. She managed to play tough-girl Beatrice 'Tris’ Prior in action-packed “Divergent,” as well as well-behaved, good girl Aimee in “The Spectacular Now.”
On The Horizon: See her next month in the dramatic thriller, “White Bird In A Blizzard” and soon in the next installment of the “Divergent” series. Shailene Woodley is not just up-and-coming; she has arrived.
3. Matt Smith
It would beWHOve you to know WHO this exuberant rising star is. All of my fellow Whovians (fans of the legendary “Doctor Who” series) are already familiar with this loveable, energetic actor, as he rose to fame by playing the 1000-year-old Time Lord, “Doctor Who,” for three seasons.
Matt Smith, with his bouncy personality, infectious accent and glorious hair has already made an impact on “Doctor Who” fans around the world. However, he is about to be catapulted into the starlight on a more global level.
Matt Smith was a relative unknown only a few short years ago, but he is soon to open some eyes when he plays the role of the primary antagonist in Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut, “Lost River,” which is slated to release later this year. He is sure to turn heads in the near future with his unique talents and eccentric personality.
On The Horizon: You can see Matt in the bizarre, alternate reality world of “Lost River” in the film’s trailer. He is also said to be playing a major role in the “Terminator: Genisys” reboot, due in 2015. I’m assuming he plays some form of artificial intelligence because, frankly, the guy just flat out looks like a robot… a robot with great hair, that is.
4. Jake Johnson
Even his name is Hollywood. You may know Johnson from his recurring role on the hit TV show, “New Girl,” which also stars Zooey Deschanel. In the show, he plays slacker/bartender/law school dropout Nick Miller. Critics and viewers often laud him for being the funniest character on the show.
Jake has also been cutting his acting teeth for his roles in “Safety Not Guaranteed,” “Drinking Buddies” and “Neighbors.” Although he’s been acting for years, Jake finally landed a lead role in the hilarious new film, “Let’s Be Cops,” alongside Damon Wayans, Jr.
On The Horizon: “Let’s Be Cops” proved to be a breakout role for JJ, as it led to his casting in the upcoming “Jurassic World” film as lead character Chris Pratt’s right-hand man. “Jurassic World” is set to hit theaters in 2015 and is sure to be a dinosaur-sized blockbuster hit that will catapult Jake Johnson into full-fledged stardom.
Also, watch out for Jake to star in “Digging for Fire” with the loveable Anna Kendrick and Orlando Bloom.
5. Sophie Turner
You'll recognize Turner for her brilliantly executed role of Sansa Stark on “Game of Thrones.” Sophie plays the tragic role of Sansa Stark with the utmost grace and humility. She absolutely nails the role by perfectly portraying every delicate aspect of the character to the best of her abilities.
As an avid reader of the book series and viewer of the show, I can attest to the fact that the role she plays could not be better suited for her, as she is an actress of immense talents.
Aside from her “Game of Thrones” gig, Turner has not branched out in a major way, just yet. Although she has the beauty and acting prowess to be a star, filming for “GOT” (and finishing high school) keeps her busy. However, the talented young starlet will soon make a major name for herself.
On The Horizon: When viewers see her play deadly teenage assassin Heather in the upcoming action flick, “Barely Lethal,” she will surely open some eyes. She is also due to star as Mary Shelley in “Mary Shelly’s Monster,” due out sometime in 2016.
