Though a bevy of possible new plot details for Star Wars: Episode VII hit headlines today courtesy of Latino Review, there are a few that particularly stand out to me, and almost all of them have to do with kids. Before you read on, here's a friendly reminder that this article contains possible spoilers for [Star Wars: Episode VII](movie:711158) and the upcoming trilogy.
One more disclaimer: The spoilers first cited in this article aren't new, but now have stronger confirmations thanks to all of the recent reveals, which is why I'm going ahead with this crazy ridiculous fan theory.
I'm going to focus on a certain set of related plot details for the sake of keeping this piece in one place, and that focus is on the rumored leads of the film:
> Leia is made leader of the Republic after her predecessor's death
> Han is a retired veteran of the Republic fleet
> Luke hasn't been seen in nearly 30 years
> the lead character is Han and Leia's daughter
> the other lead is the child of Lando, and either a male or female depending on who is cast
> the other lead is a Stormtrooper, also either a male or female depending on who is cast
> dialogue for these two characters is very rough in the second draft
> Luke has no known offspring
Along with giving us a look at what Leia is up to, it also gives serious fuel to the rumors that Daisy Ridley is playing the daughter of Han Solo (and, more than likely, Princess Leia). While John Boyega has been rumored to be our "Stormtrooper" character, it's also fairly possible for him to play Lando's offspring. We may just be seeing a face that hasn't been brought to the forefront (I see you, fresh-faced actress Crystal Clarke) for the Calrissian offspring, if all of this is true.
Also, while it's been stated that Expanded Universe canon has been chucked for the sake of creating a new narrative, it really seems like the film might be borrowing some elements: Oscar Isaacs has also been rumored to be playing a Solo offspring, and with Daisy Ridley, we might very well have our Jaina and Jacen Solo.
In EU canon, Lando has a son: Lando Calrissian Jr., nicknamed Chance, but he is much younger than Jaina and Jacen. Also unsettling is the fact that we have no confirmation on whether or not Billy Dee Williams will be reprising his role as Lando, though he definitely wants to. (Williams has confirmed that he's involved in Star Wars Rebels.)
The greatest difference in these details, though, is that Luke has been missing for years, so if these rumors are true, the Solo kids aren't going to be trained by their uncle in the Jedi arts.
Still, I'm interested in the new and unexpected possibilities within the new canon. In my perfect world, the leads of this franchise would be the respective daughters of Han Solo and Lando Calrissian, with Boyega's Stormtrooper closing out the new trio. Han and Lando would raise their daughters almost competitively: Leia's inevitable headache from managing the New Republic won't be helped her husband and his buddy talking their daughters into drag-racing excommunicated imperial ships.
But the world is not perfect (or mine - yet) and the storyline is still unconfirmed, unpredictable.
All of the spoilers thus far seem to have run along the same storyline, though. If all goes according to these rumors, we might just have our Solo-Skywalker and Calrissian next-gen team-up after all.
Stay tuned for more details on the upcoming film! Star Wars Episode VII hits theaters on December 16, 2015.
