It’s official! Jennifer Lawrence has set the world record as the highest-grossing action heroine. She will be featured in the 2015 Guiness Book of World Records which will hit shelves on Sept. 11. Can't nothin' hold this girl down!

The Hunger Games franchise that allowed her to win this title has made over $1.52 billion worldwide. The second movie, [The Hunger Games: Catching Fire](movie:303520) alone made over $854 million internationally and will also be featured in the World Record book as the highest-grossing post-apocalyptic movie ever. These numbers are absolutely insane, especially when you consider that we still have two more movies left!

While JLaw has the crown today, there are still so many action heroines of the past and present that deserve recognition. So, even if it's just here on Moviepilot, I would like to dedicate some time to some of my favorite heroines.

Sigourney Weaver has been kicking the butts of aliens and ghosts since the late 1970's. As Ellen Ripley she was the main protagonist of the Alien franchise for almost 20 years. This role actually earned Weaver her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. She is also known for her roles in Ghostbusters, Avatar, and [The Cabin in the Woods](movie:30883), amongst many others.

Linda Hamilton is best known for playing Sarah Connor in the first and second films of the Terminator franchise, as well as a voiceover role in Terminator Salvation. After her success in the Terminator films, she went on to star in Dante's Peak, the CBS Beauty and the Beast television series, and her reoccurring role in Chuck.

Once Kate Beckinsale was cast as the vampire Selene in the 2003 movie Underworld and the sequels, she was known as one of the most badass dark action heroines to ever grace the screen - and she did it in a catsuit. She has since played equally cool roles in Van Helsing, Whiteout, and Total Recall.

While she may be known more today for being a humanitarian, mother, and, most recently, the wife of Brad Pitt, no one could forget that Angelina is also one of the best women to handle a gun in film. With movies like the Lara Croft series, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Wanted, and Salt under her belt, Angelina Jolie is clearly not to be messed with.

How much do I even need to say about Uma Thurman? I think this video from Kill Bill: Vol. 1 says it all for me.

As we all know, Milla Jovovich is so much more than just Michelle Burroughs from Dazed and Confused and Katinka from Zoolander. This chick is a bonafide badass, known for fighting zombies in all 6 of the Resident Evil movies. The 6th and final film is set to come out in 2016.

This list would not be complete without including Trinity from The Matrix trilogy. While she can shoot guns and wear leather with the best of them, she is also able to play a wide range of characters. She was also in the Oscar nominated film Chocolat alongside Johnny Depp, Christopher Nolan's 2000 thriller Memento, and Red Planet.

Michelle Yeoh performs most her own stunts. Yes, you read that correctly. Yes, that's super admirable. Michelle has worked alongside other famous martial artists like Jackie Chan and Jet Li. She first gained public attention for her work in Hong Kong action films before playing Wai Lin in Tomorrow Never Dies and Yu Shu Lien in the multi-Academy Award winning film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. That's definitely a woman who can hold her own.

So while Jennifer Lawrence might be the highest-grossing action heroine at the moment, but it seems like we might still just be at the tip of the iceberg when it comes to women kicking ass and taking names in film.

This list in no way encompasses every woman who has ever been awesome in an action film! These are just some of my favorites, so feel free to add yours!

Who of these female action stars is your favorite?
