By definition, "low-budget" and "musical" aren't usually terms that sit well together. But it seems The Last 5 Years is breaking the mould.

The musical rom-com stars everyone's queen Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan, and is based on the stage musical of the same name by Jason Robert Brown.

It tells the story of a five-year relationship between a rising novelist, James, and a struggling actress called Cathy.

The original show was innovative for its use of dual chronology: Cathy's life is shown in reverse order, while James's is chronological. The two characters only meet in the middle.

The Last 5 Years premiered at TIFF last week, and the early previews are promising. A new clip shows Kendrick and Jordan mid-romantic number, with Kendrick serenading and snogging her man as he drives (do not try this at home).
