[The Amazing Spider-Man 3](movie:671279) is a ways off now that Sony has pushed its date all the way to 2018. But the [Sinister Six](movie:1274281), a spin-off film featuring some of Spidey's arch-enemies, will be coming sooner, in 2016.
But one question that hasn't been answered (yet) is the role of Spider-man in this upcoming villain film. You'd think he would have to be in it, right? Without Spider-man, who will the Sinister Six even face off against?
Well, Andrew Garfield gave us more than a hint about Sony's plans. In an interview with the Toronto Sun, the actor who plays Spider-man spoke out about his excitement for the film. Especially in regards to Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods) being the writer and director.
“I know more than I’m allowed to say right now.
I can say I’m really excited about Drew Goddard, who’s going to be writing and directing The Sinister Six movie. And whether I’m involved in that or not is kind of immaterial.
I don’t know if I should say anything right now. But Drew is really exciting. Did you see Cabin in the Woods?"
Of course, Cabin in the Woods is considered a great film for containing such a surprising premise within a seemingly typical horror film. Garfield claimed that "surprise" is why he's not willing to spoil anymore secrets.
But how could Spider-man be "immaterial" to a film about his own villains? It looks like Sony has plans to break a few rules and show us something entirely new in terms of how we watch superhero films. It's probably overdue, and we'll see if they can deliver.
