So it seems that after we are introduced to the world of Gotham, Selina Kyle will be the second villain that the show focuses on. The first, as I assumed, will be the Penguin, who we saw leaving the city in some of the previews. Most of the previews focused on Oswald, so does this mean that most of that footage was taken from the initial episode, or just cleverly combined to be a little misleading? Will Cobblepot break with Mooney right from the start, or is he heading back to town to rendezvous with his boss? Is that scene with Gordon on the docks in the very first episode, or do we (as I would presume) have a while to go before we see the rookie detective pushed that far?
Check out my breakdown of the behind-the-scenes special for more details on what we saw of penguin, and why it looks like he leaves the city.
The other interesting thing about the synopsis is that it clarifies some more about Selina Kyle's involvement in the child-smuggling ring that we also saw in the special. It's clear that Kyle is a potential victim of the ring, but the question of why there is a gang kidnapping children in Gotham city has yet to be answered.
Are they connected to one of the crime families? Or perhaps is this a completely separate outfit that the writers are using as a device to show that organized crime is not the only issue within Gotham city? This could also be a huge part of Kyle's backstory; the producers have dropped lots of hints about sympathetic villains, so will we see a Selina on the side of Wayne at the beginning, even on the side of the police if they rescue her from this situation?
It's also interesting to note that Gertrude Kapleput will be making an appearance - clearly the relationship between Oswald and his mother will be deepened in this episode - is it possible that we see her reaction when she finds out that he may be dead?
For a show that has released the sheer volume of teasers and featurettes that Gotham has, it is impressive to see how many questions there are still to be answered even in the first two episodes. I, for one, cannot wait to find out some of the answers!
