Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto has announced that he'll be premiering a new short featuring the characters of Pikmin at the Tokyo International Film Festival next month.

Miyamoto produced the film as part of a research project for Nintendo, for whom he's most famous for producing the Mario series and The Legend of Zelda.

The film is a compilation of three other shorts - “The Night Juicer,” “Treasures in a Bottle,” and “Occupational Hazards". Miyamoto will present the film with Nobuo Kawakami, chairman of Dwango and producer at Studio Ghibli.

Pikmin challenges the player to help Captain Olimar, a tiny alien from a planet called Hocotate. After his plane crashes in an uncharted planet, Olimar must piece his craft back together and leave within 30 days or face dying from oxygen poisoning.

There's no trailer or images as yet, but watch this space. The Tokyo International Film Festival will be held Oct 25-31.
