As the final Hobbit movie approaches, fans are looking forward to the climactic battle of the Five Armies, seeing the end of Smaug at Laketown, and the heroic last stand of Thorin Oakenshield.

Peter Jackson has already promised that [The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies](movie:512312) will act as a sort of bridge between the lighter mood of the Hobbit movies and the more menacing world of Lord of the Rings.

But there is something else that will be looked out for in The Hobbit 3: how much will Peter Jackson change from the books?

There have already been some significant changes, such as the expanded roles of the elves and the Orcs, Azog and Bolg. But let's run through the biggest potential changes for The Hobbit 3:

Thorin Oakenshield SURVIVES!?

Thorin Oakenshield, redemption awaits?
Thorin Oakenshield, redemption awaits?

Thorin Oakenshield has been leading his pack of dwarves across these all 3 Hobbit movies, and as time has passed, he has become more and more set on vengeance for his lost Dwarven Kingdom.

The Hobbit 3 sees Thorin go fully over to the other side, hell bent on war at any cost. He is, in some ways, the reverse of Aragorn, with the future King of Gondor becoming a ranger and exploring Middle Earth, before returning to take his place his throne.

Thorin never has the chance to get away from his responsibilities, and it leads him on a dark path. His redemption, in the books, comes with a heroic last stand. Could Peter Jackson really reverse this, and have him survive? It seems unlikely, but anything is possible.

Sauron Makes His First Appearance

Smaug, not the biggest threat in The Hobbit 3?
Smaug, not the biggest threat in The Hobbit 3?

This one is perhaps more possible, especially when you take Peter Jackson's comment about The Hobbit 3 bridging the gap to Lord of the Rings into consideration.

Allegedly, Sauron will turn his dark eye on Gandalf, and we may even see the return of the uncorrupted Saruman, who could come to his fellow wizard's aid.

Aragorn, or Frodo?

Unfortunately, unless it is being kept seriously under wraps, it doesn't look like Viggo Mortensen's Aragorn will make an appearance in The Hobbit 3, but might we see Martin Freeman's Bilbo Baggins share a scene with Elijah Woods' Frodo?

What would you most like to see in The Hobbit 3? Would you like to Thorin make it out of the Battle of the Five Armies alive? An uncorrupted Saruman? Have your say below the line!
