This week has been both wonderful and excruciating for fans eagerly awaiting the release of [Star Wars: Episode VII](movie:711158). One of Daisy Ridley's costumes has been sketched out, we got an aerial look at the new X-Wings and the Millennium Falcon, and today, two new videos capturing filming in-progress have leaked, from the set at RAF Greenham Common, a former Royal Air Force station in Berkshire, England. Check them out:
While they're not especially telling, it's great to get a closer look at what may very well be a base for the new Galactic Republic, formed by the rebels under Leia's guidance.
In the first video, we're given vocal confirmation that John Boyega is in this scene, with his name being repeated on a megaphone. He's been hard at work on set, to the point where he's had to put off playing Bungie's new hit video game, Destiny (a game that actually drew a good deal of inspiration from Star Wars).
(Look out, Destiny, the Star Wars cast is comin'!)
The video also showed off some of the costuming we can expect for this scene, which look more closely fashioned to the original trilogy (which makes sense) and some of the actors are dressed in gear that slightly resembles the description of Daisy Ridley's character. It's not a huge surprise that she's allied with the Republic: after all, she's the only person on the current roster that is signed for all three movies, so it's easy to assume that she's one of our heroes. Get the full description of her costume here, then compare below!
Ridley's also got a flight suit that's similar to Luke Skywalker's - so she's a pilot, and if these sketches are to be believed, also a Jedi. Or at least a padawan, hey.
The same set is also home to at least three of the new X-wing style ships (they may be called something completely different) that we were given a look at in a previous video by J.J. Abrams himself.
In a pleasant turn of events, the Millennium Falcon was stationed at the base as well.
Basically, there seems to be a whole lot going down at this base:
- The Falcon is stationed there, which means that Oscar Isaacs (said to be piloting the ship), Harrison Ford, Peter Mayhew and anyone else involved with the ship in the new films could also appear in this scene.
- I'm also banking on Carrie Fisher being on set as Leia, primarily because Leia has classically preferred being closer to the action than any princess or government official should be.
- Leaks of this scene also came alongside news that there will be a massive battle involving X-Wings (predictable) and I have a feeling that this is the prep scene that leads up to take-off.
- While what we saw being shot was primarily background work, John Boyega is definitely in this scene.
This isn't Boyega's first Space Rodeo, either. He led horror-scifi thriller Attack the Block, where urban teens took on vicious aliens that dominated their neighborhood. Regardless of what anyone says, Boyega dominated that film as the fearless leader with a katana - which puts me at ease, because he handled it great.
What do you think is going on in this scene - and are you ready for new heroes like Boyega?
[Star Wars: Episode VII](movie:711158) comes out on December 18, 2015.
