Rumor: J.K. Rowling told Alan Rickman everything about Snape's storyline BEFORE filming. He was the only one in the world who knew what would happen.

The Truth: He knew basically nothing. That performance was pure instinct.

Rickman explains:

She gave me one tiny, little, left of field piece of information that helped me think that he was more complicated and that the story was not going to be as straight down the line as everybody thought.

If you remember when I did the first film she'd only written three or four books, so nobody knew where it was really going except her.

It was important for her that I know something, but she only gave me a tiny piece of information which helped me think it was a more ambiguous route.

So, with this in mind, all of that ambiguity in Rickman's performance was based on a *tiny* amount of info.

Anyone who's followed the full Harry Potter saga knows that Snape is a huge, pivotal character.

Rickman brings this to life, brilliantly.

His emotional complexity give the story a depth like no other role.

The way he delivers the all-important 'Always', kills me every time.

Remember, by the time Goblet of Fire was filming, the Half-Blood Prince book had been published, so Rickman had more insight into the part. Until that point, he was on his own.

All he knew until the fourth movie was that Snape:

was a human being and not an automaton and I knew there was some sense of protection for Harry...I worked that out. It was enough to know, I didn't know he was a double agent.

Rickman has shown great loyalty to the role.

Rickman explains:

Every time I put that costume on something weird took over. It's the only character and I suppose by my own instance really, [who] never changed his costume over 10 years.

To me, the fact that Alan Rickman didn't know everything about Snape, but just went on instinct, shows what a great actor and Harry Potter fan he is.

But then, you knew that already...

Is Snape the greatest hero in the Harry Potter saga?
