We love to read about our favorite superheroes and we love to watch them in movies and TV series, but being able to be them is where it gets really good. We aren't necessarily them, but we can control them in their own video games. Most superheroes who get their own theatrical releases get their own video games about them as well. Sometimes we get superhero video games because well, why not. There have been so many good video games and so many still to come. As a fan of superheroes and video games I have played many superhero games and wish to enlighten those who have not played such games. Therefore I have listed below some of my favorite video games. These games are not listed as best to worst or successful to unsuccessful in stores, but some that are I have played and gotten enjoyment from playing them. Seeing that there are so many good superhero video games I have narrowed my list down to ten games. I could go on forever about great games but for now this will do.
Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions
In this amazing SpiderMan game, no pun intended, we get to experience the wall crawler as four different versions of your friendly neighborhood Spiderman. The 2099 Spiderman is the secret alter ego of Miguel O'Hara. O'Hara is a brilliant geneticist living in the year 2099 who is trying to recreate the abilities of the original Spiderman, Peter Parker, in other people but an accident occurs and he receives those abilities instead. The Amazing Spiderman is the one most people are familiar with and doesn't need any explanation. Noir Spiderman is a version set during the Great Depression and is similar to the Amazing Spiderman but does have some differences. The Noir Spiderman was bitten by a mystical spider and gained its genetic abilities. Though he has no wall-crawling ability, he has increased agility, strength, a form of spider-sense, and can spray nets of webbing from his hand. Finally, Ultimate Spiderman appears sometime after an event happens in the Marvel universe. I won't say what it is because for those who are comic readers I will not spoil what happens. Miles Morales dawns the black Spiderman suit and fights crime like the rest. In this game these four characters interact through time and work together to stop Mysterio. It is a lot of fun with a Spiderman humor to it that is enjoyable.
Ultimate Alliance 1 & 2
This is a game that all Marvel fans waited for and were exstatic when the first version was released in October of 2006 and then its sequel released in September of 2009. I love both of these games so much that I couldn't chose between them. The first one I thought had a more elaborate story but the second one had better combat and graphics. The reason I, and many others, love these games is because we have the choice of who we want to be and who we want on our team of four. In the first Ultimate Alliance you start out with Spiderman, Thor, Captain America, and Wolverine and you are being attacked by Dr. Doom on a S.H.I.E.L.D heli-carrier. You have to maneuver through waves of enemies to meet up with Nick Furry and run of Doom. Once you make your way through the heli-carrier you can switch out your team members and see who is available and who you have to unlock. In Ultimate Alliance 2 you start out with Spiderman, Captain America, Wolverine, and Iron Man instead of Thor. This time you are invading Latveria to take down the new leader and you are lead by Furry this time. The same function is there to manage your team and there are more characters you can use than in the first one. Both games have great stories and great character development. If a third one is made I hope that they take the elements from the these two games and implement them into that. Also, I would like to see more character that you can use or unlock like Ant-Man, Wasp, Vision, War Machine, Hawkeye, and with Guardians of the Galaxy having their own movie I would love to see a cameo from them.
Injustice: Gods Among Us
I am a fan of fighting games and when I heard that NetherRealm Studios was creating a DC fighting game I was excited for two reasons. One, with the previous game Mortal Combat vs. DC being freaking awesome I was stoked to be able to have another fighting game with DC characters in it. Second, with the focus of the game being solely DC characters that meant that there would be more heroes and villains than what we saw in Mortal Combat vs. DC. Of course I wasn't disappointed when I got my hands of the game and continued to play it with my friends. The fighting controls were smooth and simple and each character had their own special that was different from everyone else. The story mode was great as well being able to play through it with most of the heroes and even some villains. There is also the S.T.A.R. lab mini games. These are obstacles and challenges that you can go through with ever character. Another thing I loved about this game were the changeable costumes. Some of the costumes where amazing and some even changed the character to someone else. I am mostly referring to the John Stewart Green Lantern costume and the Stephen Amell Green Arrow Costume. They also released a way to download new characters like Batgirl, Lobo, Scorpion, General Zodd, Zatanna, and Martian Manhunter. If they release another character extension pack I would love to see them add Red Tornado, a Flash villain (I'd be okay with anyone honestly), Black Canary, Captain Atom, and Red Hood or Robin. My favorite and best character to use is Green Arrow, what is yours?
X-Men: Next Dimension
Another great fighting game for DC is this 2002 X-Men game. This game doesn't have the greatest of graphics but hey it was release twelve years ago and it's still a good game. This one may not be as known as other X-Men games but I ask that you give this one a chance. It has some characters like Forge, Havok, Lady Deathstrike, and Pyro that you can't play on every X-Men game. Forge is actually who you start of with and you are fighting Mystique. The game has a steady flow to it and it holds up for its time. I still enjoy playing this one and I know others out there will too. I would love to see a remade version of this game with the same flow as Injustice or Mortal Combat vs. Marvel.
The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction
The Hulk is my favorite superhero of all time and when I play this game I Hulk smash everything. This is one of the better open world superhero games in my opinion. In this game you play as the Hulk and Bruce Banner and you have different task and missions that you take part in throughout the area you are in. One of the best things about this game is that you get to use Hulk Hands. For those of you who don't know that Hulk Hands are it is where Hulk takes a car and rips it in half and use the two halves of the car like boxing gloves.
This game over all is a blast to play especially if you just wanna destroy things and you need something to take your anger out on. I also enjoyed the Incredible Hulk video game based off of the 2008 Incredible Hulk movie remake I recommend that game as well.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
A terrible movie was remade into a great video game that stays true to who Wolverine is. With countless violence and murder this is what should have been in the origin movie. The effects in this movie and the dialogue were pretty good and just enjoyable to take part in. This game also had insane combat that made for awesome counters and combos to throw at your enemies. The story is like the movie but different from it enough so that it doesn't remind you of it. There are appearances from characters like Sabertooth, Blob, Deadpool (though he still can't talk), and many others. This game is perfect for those who are true Wolverine fans. What other X-Men origin do you want to play?
I am a huge fan of Lego games and this one is a good reason why. This is a superhero game that does something that little if any video game has done. In this game once you have beaten it as Batman you can go through each section and play through it again but as the villains in that sequence. You get to play as Two Face, Riddler, Joker, Harley Quinn, Mr. Freeze, and many more. That was something I didn't know going into the game but was pleased with it when it came time for that. I know that some people will wonder why I picked this one and Lego Batman 2 and to that I answer, I enjoyed sticking to the Batman universe. Don't get me wrong I loved the second one and am looking forward to Lego Batman 3 Beyond Gotham but the first one is still my favorite. I enjoyed going through as Batman and Robin finding power ups and unlocking new characters like Nightwing and Batgirl. It was also awesome to have the home menu in the Batcave and explore that. I have to make an honorable mention to Lego Marvel because I enjoy playing that as well. Which Lego game in general is your favorite?
Marvel vs. Cap Com
If you haven't noticed yet I am a fan of fighting games. This is a game franchise alone is amazing and when you add the Marvel universe in it you gain a much larger audience. This game was incredible for many reasons including its wide variety of playable characters and having dual character attacks made for great times with your friends. When I play I used either Gambit and Hulk or Colossus and Spiderman. I didn't use many of the Capcom characters just because I was more familiar with the Marvel characters but both sides had great fighters. I know that there are more versions of this game and they are great but this one was what I spent most of my time playing. Also, the colors and movement of the gameplay was incredible. For this game being fourteen years old it still holds up with some of the great games we have today. Who did you use to fight against your friends?
Okay, I'm pretty sure I would get so much hate if I did not include the Arkham series on this list. That being said I did not include it for that reason I included it because it is a great game franchise and just a great Batman game. I had a hard time choosing between Asylum, City, and Origin so I chose them all. I love all of them and I cannot wait for Arkham Knight to come out. Knight will be great for the fact that it will be an open world concept and you can drive around the freaking Batmobile. Each game has something that makes it unique and great on its own. I love the storyline for City the most just because you have to do what the Joker says or everyone dies. It makes for great dialogue from Batman and Joker which kept me entertained the whole time. I can go on and on about how these games are great but I think everyone knows that. Which Arkham game is your favorite?
And finally we have what some consider to be the greatest X-Men game of all time. I have played this game dozens of times at my local skating rink where they have this arcade game. This is a great X-Men game that has member such as Cyclops, Colossus, Dazzler, Nightcralwer, Storm, and Wolverine as playable characters. Shadowcat and Professor X made appearances as supporting characters and added to the games storyline. In this game you and five of your friends took on villains like Mystique and Juggernaut to get to the final boss, Magneto. The game was and still is a classic and for being released in 1992 is still a fan favorite. I am glad it stayed as an arcade game because I think that is what made it so much fun to play. When I played I was always Colossus because he was the muscles of the group and the biggest hitter. Each character had their own special that they could use at certain time while playing. Many like myself emptied their pockets full of quarters to take down Magneto. I would give anything to have this arcade game in my house. Which X-Men did you choose to take down Magneto's Brotherhood of Mutants?
There you have it, a list of great superhero video games that you may or may not have heard of. Let me know if you agree or if you don't and what games am I missing. Also, let me know of any other upcoming superhero games that you know of so I can be on the look for them. Hit me up in the comments and as always, take it easy.
