The 1980s were a prime time to be a child star: you were cute, had great hair, and a queue of people trying to corrupt you with sex, drugs, and awkward nightclub photos.

But sometimes - sometimes - a few of those sweet little darlings managed to slip through Hollywood's cracks and into a fairly normal existence.

Here are 5 people you never expected to see looking so healthy:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) Charlie Korsmo

Who: Charlie Korsmo is best known for being the pretty adorable son of Peter Pan in Hook, and for his supporting role in Can't Hardly Wait.

Since then: Korsmo has amassed a pretty impressive profile, with a degree in physics from MIT and a second one from Yale Law School. He's now a Law professor in Cleveland, Ohio.

2) Phoebe Cates

Who: Most famous as the dream girl of all '80s teenage boys in that memorable red bikini scene in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Cates later had starring roles in Gremlins and Drop Dead Fred.

Since then: Cates married actor Kevin Kline in 1989, and left acting in 2001 to open a fashion boutique and focus on raising their children.

3) Ilan Mitchell-Smith

Who: Mitchell-Smith starred in John Hughes' classic Weird Science, before deciding to leave acting altogether in 1991.

Since then: He gained an MA in Medieval Studies and is now an associate professor in English at California State University, Long Beach, where he specialises in the study of chivalry. Kinda ironic for a guy that once had to create his own woman to avoid speaking to real ones.

4) Ariana Richards

Who: Richards played badass babe Lex Murphy in Jurassic Park, and also had appearances in Tremors and Golden Girls.

Since then: She's acted intermittently, but focuses on her career as a painter and has three (count 'em) degrees in fine art.

5) Josh Saviano

Who: Saviano played loveable geek Paul Pfeiffer in The Wonder Years, which he continued to the show's end in 1993.

Since then: Saviano studied Political Science at Yale, where he was president of the Sigma Nu fraternity. He is currently a partner at a law firm in New York. The moral of the story? Geeks always win.
