Bethesda - the studio behind the Fallout and Elder Scrolls games - has teamed up with newcomers, Tango Gameworks, to deliver a survival horror game which looks like it is just dripping with blood, barbed wire, and practically every other horror trope out there.
Titled, The Evil Within, and destined to hit stores next month, the game recently debuted a new gameplay/cinematic hybrid trailer which is sure to excite and creep you out in equal measure.
The game certainly piles on the horror thick and fast. You can clearly see references to various horror staples (I mean, it appears to be set in a mental hospital for goodness sake), including Japanese and Lovecraftian horror. Furthermore, many viewers and reviewers have cited thematic and visual similarities to games such as Resident Evil, Silent Hill and Dead Space.
Let's take a closer look at some of the horror.
Creepy undead guy in a hood? Yeah, I'm pretty sure we've just met our antagonist.
Creepy hospital? Check. Crazy doctor dude? Check. Poor lighting? Check.
A nightmarish world? A particularly sadistic abattoir? Both?
And where would any horror video game be without some standard zombie bad guys?
But never fear, there are also some tentacle faced H.P. Lovecraft meets John Carpenter ghoulies.
The Evil Within is currently expected on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One on October 14th, 2014.
