Arrow Season Three is almost here, and one of the things that fans are most excited about is the possibility of an actual relationship between Oliver and Felicity (affectionately known as Olicity). It's been revealed that Oliver finally asks Felicity out on a date, as he feels that maybe things are calming down, maybe he can finally have something resembling a normal life.
But according to this new poster and the description for the season, it looks like Ollie is out of luck on that one. Sigh.
It's one of the few pieces of official promo that shows Oliver all alone (and on a lonely, battle-torn road, just to hammer the point home), with the ominous tagline "Saving a city takes a toll.".
The synopsis also shows that Oliver doesn't get to have too much time to relax and enjoy his non-vigilante life before the bad guys start showing up again, and that the attempt to do so actually costs him.
Oliver thinks he can finally balance being both the Arrow and Oliver Queen and asks Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) out on a date. However, when a new villain (guest star Peter Stormare) emerges, who has claimed the name Vertigo from the recently deceased Count, Oliver is caught off-guard and someone close to him is hurt.
Well, no prizes for guessing who it is that "gets hurt". Sure, it's possible that Diggle or Roy fall prey to the new big bad, but I'm putting my money on Felicity. It's a classic superhero story; the vigilante attempts to love, the woman he loves gets hurt because of their relationship, he decides to reign it in again. It's classic, and sad, and prolongs the tension of a relationship that should happen, but may never.
Of course, the other toll that it may take is on Oliver himself. Again, in line with classic vigilante storytelling, the cost of being constantly alone is that the vigilante can shut himself off from everyone around him, become emotionally damaged, even get a little crazy.
So far, Oliver has done a seriously bad job of keeping his secret identity a secret (at least from the people in his life), so could this season see a move in the opposite direction? Will Oliver be cutting people from his inner circle, rather than accepting more in? Felicity is a prime candidate for that, especially if she gets hurt (again), and we already know that there will be some tension between Oliver and Diggle when it comes to Diggle's new status as a father. Could this poster be a hint that Oliver will be much more alone in Season Three?
I would hate to see the core of "Team Arrow" break up, and I doubt that they will. At the very least, we may see a repeat of what already happened with Diggle, where a character divorces themselves from Oliver for a period of time, before all involved realize that they need each other and come back together.
Finally, it's interesting to note that in the poster, it looks like Oliver is walking away from Starling City!
Could this be another time where Oliver feels the need to leave the city to cope with events? Or is it symbolic of a decision to leave his life in the city as Oliver Queen, in that he may decide to cut all ties and simply be the [Arrow](series:720988) to protect the people he cares about?
Of course, this could mean none of these things, and just be a poster, but isn't it fun to wonder?
