Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters has become a bit of a guilty pleasure film for me. Between the kick-ass female characters, surprisingly decent CGI, and sweet practical makeup FX, Hansel & Gretel satisfies that occasional desire I have to watch things esplode and Famke Janssen be a badass witch.
Because the film was a surprise hit, a sequel seemed all but definite. However, now a Shock Till You Drop interview with screenwriter Tommy Wirkola puts the future of the series in question.
According to the interview, Wirkola has finished the script for Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2 and passed it along to the studio. But whether or not we ever seen the film... that's another story.
“I’ve written the script for it. I’ve given it to Paramount and it’s up to them now. But I don’t know what’s going to happen. Jeremy [Renner] is so busy these days, I don’t know how they’re going to juggle all of that, but it’s up to [Paramount]. We’ll see. Hopefully, I’ll get to do another film first. They really liked the script I gave them. The first film was a learning curve for me working in the studio system and the script I wrote for the original was so different. We ended up taking a lot out and altering stuff that first time. I’m smarter now. I tried taking what I learned and still delivered a sequel script that’s an R-rated action film.”
So, that's slightly disheartening. Renner is obviously tied up with Avengers stuff for the foreseeable future and he also has a few dramatic films coming out over the next year. Would Hansel & Gretel be the same without Jeremy Renner? Debatable.
