There aren't too many twists that can throw a comic-book fan off their game. After all, we're all pretty darned used to characters being cloned, coming back from the dead, dying again, and then having their younger self brought to the present day.

And that's just Jean Grey.

Some characters, though, are seemingly too iconic to mess around with. Some back-stories are just too essential - some motivations too necessary - to change on a whim.

Wolverine is very much one of those characters.

Or is he?

A newly released clip from X-Men: Days of Future Past has thrown up a possible pairing that - for a generation used to Logan hopelessly pining after Jean Grey - is about as shocking as it gets.

Get ready for Wolverine. And Storm. Making out.

Now, in fairness, this seems an awful lot like a joke. Especially seeing as it was originally to be found within the X-Men: DOFP gag reel - and considering Halle Berry's reaction afterwards. That being said, though, it also has something of a 'wait, can we get away with this in the final movie' vibe to it.

Which isn't all that surprising, seeing as - as it turns out - the idea of Wolverine and Storm hooking up isn't all that new at all.

In fact, in the comics, it goes all the way back to 1987 - and Uncanny X-Men Annual #11.

In which this totally happens:

This relationship between the two then became something of a recurring theme over the next few decades, with assorted kisses...

...and flirtations...

...becoming more and more common...

...until eventually...

...they ended up finally getting the beginnings of an actual romantic plot-line last year...

...only for Marvel to go and kill off Wolverine (or, at least, get ready to, round about October 8...) in the upcoming conclusion to The Death of Wolverine mini-series.

All of which might be completely irrelevant - after all, Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry have known each other a really long time...

As in, even before Swordfish...
As in, even before Swordfish...

...and could easily just be messing around. It might, though, also suggest that one of the actors - or the X-Men: DOFP creative team - was aware of the hinted relationship's history, and thought it'd be pretty neat to give fans a glimpse of this...

...irrespective of whether there were ever any real plans to put the scene into the final cut.

Which, if true, would be awesome.

Now just to see if the two have a relationship in [X-Men: Apocalypse](movie:1194267)...
